Professor Dr. habil. Christoph Igel

Professor Christoph Igel is the Scientific Director of the Educational Technology Lab at the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI). He is responsible for the scientific-technological management of the laboratory. He is Principal Researcher, Spokesperson DFKI Berlin and member of the DFKI Steering Committee. After studies in history, sport science, political science and educational science, he completed a doctorate at Saarland University on the importance of cognitions for technology-based motor learning. He then wrote a postdoctoral thesis at the University of Münster on the potential and added value of technology enhanced learning for the strategic development of universities and academic disciplines in Europe. He holds the post of Professor of Educational Technology in the Faculty of Computer Science at Technical University of Chemnitz and is a Visiting Professor at the Research Focus Digitization, Diversity and Lifelong Learning as well as a Visiting Professor at the Continuing Education School in Shanghai Jiao Tong University (China).

Thus far, Professor Igel has been responsible for over 100 national and international research, development and transfer projects in digital transformation in education as well as on how qualification and work are being changed by cutting edge technologies and artificial intelligence. He has written numerous monographs and articles in national and international journals, edited collected editions, and been a regular keynote speaker and driving force at national and international conferences for industry, science, associations and politics. He advises Dax companies on staff and work development issues in the era of digitisation, the internet of things and assistance services, and is an expert reviewer for funding programmes run by institutions such as the German Federal Ministries of Economics and Technology and of Education and Research and the Austrian Federal Ministry of Science, Research and Industry.

Professor Igel is the chairman of the ‘Intelligent Education Networks’ expert group for the federal government’s National Digital Summit. He is a member of board of the ddn network that is part of the ‘New Quality of Work’ initiative by the German Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, a member of the board of the Digital Networking charter under the auspices of the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology, and an ambassador for the National MINT Forum to promote education in the fields of mathematics, informatics, natural sciences and technology. He is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Foundation Haus der Kleinen Forscher. He is co-chair of the ‘Technology-Enhanced Teaching and Learning in Medicine’ working group for the German Society of Medical Informatics, Biometry and Epidemiology and the German Society for Computer Science. Professor Igel’s personal activities in research, development and transfer and his work as a foundation trustee have received repeated recognition from representatives of the business, science, political and social worlds.
