Sports Development Plan Chemnitz 2035

Sport and physical activity are trending in Germany. Among the population aged 16 and older, only 20% report not engaging in any form of sport (Repenning et al., 2019). The types of physical activities people engage in are diverse and, like society itself, are subject to change over time: new types of sports and physical activities emerge, others lose significance, while some are adopted by new target groups. They are practiced within various organizational settings (e.g. in sports clubs, with commercial providers, in schools, or informally on a self-organized basis) and for different, evolving motives (performance, health, fun, etc.).

These changes also influence the number and design of sports facilities and spaces for physical activity provided by a municipality. The Sports Development Plan Chemnitz 2035 builds on the current planning, which runs through 2025, and examines the changes in sports and physical activity practices. It evaluates the existing sports infrastructure and opportunities and provides recommendations for future sports development in Chemnitz. The study includes several data collection efforts, with a particular focus on a population survey regarding sports and physical activity behavior.
