MoKo-Fit 2.0: Sustainable implementation and structural anchoring of the exercise-promoting intervention concept “MoKo-Fit” for senior citizens in the city of Chemnitz

The “MoKo-Fit” project (motor-cognitive exercise concept as a health-promoting measure for older people) was implemented and evaluated in Chemnitz between 2021 and 2023 (see here). For this purpose, exercise groups with over 65-year-old citizens in the selected districts of Gablenz, Helbersdorf and Siegmar were instructed for 12 weeks by experienced exercise instructors in both cognitively and physically demanding exercises. The scientific analyses demonstrated positive effects on health, physical and cognitive functions relevant to everyday life, as well as psychological and social well-being. In addition, the participants showed a high level of satisfaction with the content and implementation of the exercise programs.

However, there is still no comprehensive range of exercise-promoting activities for people aged 65 and over in Chemnitz. In order to make options for health-promoting exercise accessible to as many senior citizens in Chemnitz as possible, the “MoKo-Fit 2.0” project aims to systematically expand the program across the entire city of Chemnitz. In addition, the topic of “promoting physical activity for older people” will be structurally anchored in the political sphere and in the local self-government of the city of Chemnitz, and the necessary local resources and capacities will be installed and developed. This includes networking local players in municipal health promotion, such as the Health Department, sports clubs or individual citizens' platforms.
