Karl Schmidt-Rottluff: Painting and Sculpture
The Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz presents a comprehensive exhibition dedicated to Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, a pivotal figure in German Expressionism and co-founder of the Brücke artists' group (1905–1913). The display features 47 paintings and two sculptures, offering insights into his artistic evolution over more than seven decades. Highlights include early oil sketches from his school years, significant works from the Brücke period, expansive landscapes from the 1920s and 1930s, and mature pieces up to 1963. The museum's extensive collection also encompasses 134 watercolours and drawings, 234 prints — including woodcuts, lithographs, and etchings — and 21 printing blocks, making it one of the most significant repositories of Schmidt-Rottluff's work.

Edvard Munch: Fear
From 10 August to 2 November 2025, the Kunstsammlungen am Theaterplatz in Chemnitz will host Edvard Munch: Fear, a major exhibition dedicated to the Norwegian painter and pioneer of modern art. The exhibition explores the central theme of fear in Munch's work, delving into related motifs such as loneliness, illness, and death. It also examines Munch's personal experiences, including his stay in Chemnitz in 1905 and his ongoing engagement with childhood memories. The exhibition will feature significant works from the museum's own collection, complemented by international loans. In addition, contemporary artists such as Marina Abramović, Monica Bonvicini, Michael Morgner, Osmar Osten, Neo Rauch, and Andy Warhol will engage in a dialogue with Munch's themes, highlighting their continued relevance today.

Romantic: From Seascapes to Forest Idylls
The Kunstsammlungen am Theaterplatz in Chemnitz presents a permanent exhibition dedicated to Romantic, showcasing approximately 50 paintings from the late 18th to the 19th century. The collection features works by prominent artists such as Caspar David Friedrich, Carl Gustav Carus, Johan Christian Dahl, and Ludwig Richter. The exhibition encompasses a variety of genres, including portraits, landscapes, and still lifes, with a focus on German and Italian motifs. Highlights include Friedrich's Sailing Ship (ca. 1815), Dahl's Coast near Castellammare in Morning Mist (1822), and Carus's View of Dresden at Sunset (ca. 1822).

Highlights Tour at the State Museum of Archaeology Chemnitz (smac)
The State Museum of Archaeology Chemnitz (smac) offers archaeological insights into 300,000 years of human history in Saxony, from the earliest hunter-gatherer societies to the beginnings of industrialization. Participants of the tour will encounter Neanderthals and Homo sapiens, Venus and Adonis, carpenters and blacksmiths, dancers and pilgrims. The tour highlights the most significant and intriguing artifacts of the smac, revealing fascinating stories behind Saxony's archaeological finds. For instance, did you know that in the 17th century, unmarried deceased individuals were buried with death crowns?
