Wanted: Diplomats for New York

Students of all departments of Chemnitz University of Technology can apply for the globally biggest United Nations simulation in Spring 2018 in New York until August 7, 2017

For the 15th time in the history of Chemnitz University of Technology the Professorship of International Relations organizes the project “UNI goes UNO” starting in October 2017. Following the great success of this year’s students at the NMUN conference (National Model United Nations) the preparations for next year are already on their way. Chemnitz students of all departments have the possibility to apply for the globally biggest and most renowned simulation of the United Nations in New York and to actively shape global politics. Anyone interested can apply until August 7th, 2017, and depending on course of study/department a course assessment can be obtained. Wanted are students with a good general knowledge and a high degree of interest for political and economic questions. Good English skills and motivation to work with other students in a team from October 2017 until July 2018 are prerequisites.

National Model United Nations (NMUN) is an international simulation conference in which the operating and working practices of the Unites Nations are realistically simulated by students. Since the foundation of the international organization and the end of the Second World War, the simulation takes place in spring in New York. In the course of the conference, students act like diplomats and represent the political and economic interest of the countries assigned to them.

The participants have the opportunity to acquire deep insights into the complex structures of the United Nations and to deal with the daily challenges of international politics and the life of a diplomat. The project offers the chance to increase negotiation and rhetoric skills, to enhance diplomatic sensitivity, and to gain experience in the field of social and intercultural competences – an excellent practice on international stage for the acquisition of work-related soft skills. Furthermore, in the course of an expedition the cosmopolitan cities Washington, D.C., and New York can be discovered and visits to embassies, the World Bank, the United Nations, and many more appointments provide insight into the political life. In March 2018, the Chemnitz students participate together with students from all over the world in the NMUN conference and act for a few days like real diplomats.
