Political Systems

Researchers at the chair “Political System” examine the political systems of single as well as the systems of subnational units such as the German federal states. A core focus lies in the analysis of the political system of the Federal Republic of Germany. Beyond, we address key subfields of political systems research, also from a comparative perspective. These include, in particular, the study of electoral systems, electoral behavior, political parties, parliaments, coalition theory, and interest groups.

Research at the chair is predominantly empirical and analytical in orientation. Particular emphasis is placed on the application and further development of appropriate methodological approaches, with methodological choices guided by the specific research questions under investigation. Accordingly, both quantitative and qualitative methods are employed, as well as formal models based on decision theory and game theory.
