The Materials Technology Colloquium (WTK) was held for the 19th time and was organised by the Institute of Materials Science and Engineering (IWW), formed by the professorships of Composites and Material Composites, Materials Science and Materials and Surface Engineering at Chemnitz University of Technology. As shown by the high number of contributions submitted by scientists and users from institutes, universities and companies from Germany and abroad, the organisation of the traditional colloquium again met with a great response. The two-day event with around 200 participants was held in the Central Lecture Hall and Seminar Building of Chemnitz University of Technology on 16 and 17 March 2017. A total of 60 technical presentations and 20 poster contributions reported on the latest research results, innovative applications and process engineering developments. The focus of this year's conference was on materials development and characterisation, surface and coating technology, development of composite materials and material composites as well as joining techniques. Particularly in the plenary lectures by renowned scientists, the participants were able to gain interesting insights into the development of new materials and processes in additive manufacturing technology and coating technology. Another highlight was the keynote lecture entitled "Work of the future" by Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Prof. e. h. mult. Dr. h. c. mult. Hans-Jörg Bullinger, to which all members of the TU were cordially invited, regardless of conference participation. The 5-minute impulse presentations by the industrial exhibitors also met with a great response from the conference participants.
During the evening event, which took place as in the previous year in the cosy "Bar Ausgleich" of the university canteen, a "Best Presenter Award" for the industrial exhibitors was presented in addition to the "Best Paper Award" and the "Best Poster Award" for the scientific participants. The first prizes went to Roland Marstatt from the University of Augsburg for the presentation "Formation of a Diffusion-Based Intermetallic Interface Layer in Friction Stir Welded Dissimilar Al-Cu Lap Joints", Rolando Candidato from the Université de Limoges with the poster contribution "Zn-Added Hydroxyapatite Coatings Developed by Plasma Spraying of Precursor Solution" and to the company GOM GmbH.
Another highlight of the evening programme was the Saxon state poetry slam champion Erik Leichter, who amused and entertained the numerous conference participants with his creative rhymes directly at the Materials Technology Colloquium.
In addition to the traditional publication of all contributions in the conference proceedings, the vast majority of authors took advantage of the opportunity to publish their research results online and thus make them visible on an international level. The English-language contributions were published in the online proceedings series IOP Conference Series: Materials Science and Engineering and can be accessed at http://iopscience.iop.org/issue/1757-899X/181/1.
The 20th Materials Engineering Colloquium will take place on 14 and 15 March 2018 at the same venue. A core topic of this anniversary event will be the final colloquium of the Collaborative Research Centre 692, in which trend-setting research results from over 12 years of research on the topic of high-strength aluminium-based lightweight materials will be presented.
