Notes & Procedure

General information & procedure

We would like to support you in successfully submitting theses in our field. In order to serve you well, we rely on you to contact us in a timely manner and discuss topic ideas with us. Transparent and reliable communication throughout the entire process is essential for good advice.

In principle, all scientific staff members of the chair can supervise theses in the study programs of the institute. Theses from other courses can be supervised by us after consultation with the first supervisor.

We ask candidates for theses in our area to proceed as follows:

Topic selection and contact supervisor

  1. Use either the suggested topics on this page, texts from courses or your own ideas as a guideline and write a short outline.
  2. Contact a member of the department who would be suitable. Send your outline by e-mail and make an appointment for a consultation.
  3. If necessary, work out a short exposé after consultation, or find an arrangement with the supervising person to secure the results of your discussions.
  4. Agree on a time frame and dates for consultations with the supervisor (usually three dates per paper, whereby the colloquium already counts as one date).
  5. Take care of the registration of the thesis at the ZPA on your own and leave the registration form either at the secretary's office or arrange a digital signature with the supervisor.

Presentation and discussion in the colloquium

Present your topic and your work progress or, if you like, data for analysis at least once in the colloquium of the junior professorship. The colloquium is conducted in the form of a research workshop and is open to bachelor students, master students, and anyone interested in writing theses in the field of Sociology of Technology & "Digital Work".

The colloquium takes place in SoSe 23 on Mondays 13.45 to 17.00, in the "Stadtlabor" Brühl 40, 09111 Chemnitz;
Zoom meeting: https://eu01web.zoom.us/j/8151412095.

Scope, form and content of the thesis

For the scope, form and content criteria of your thesis, please refer to the examination regulations that apply to you. We have summarized notes on evaluation and formalities at the bottom of this page under "Requirements for academic theses". For any additional conditions, restrictions or deviations, the arrangements with the supervisor apply, as long as they do not violate the requirements of the examination regulations.

Defense of the master thesis

In the master's program "Digital Work", an oral defense of the master's thesis is scheduled in addition to the written examination. The requirement of the examination regulations §26, para. 4 is that you explain the basic argumentation of the thesis.

We handle this appointment like this: After the thesis has been checked, the first examiner will usually arrange a 30-minute appointment with you. (In exceptional cases or in case of scheduling problems, the second examiner or other professors may also conduct the defense). The defense can also be held as an online consultation. The content of the appointment is that we talk together constructively about the work and the process of writing it. This is also an opportunity to talk about the evaluation of the work and how it came about. You will spend 15 minutes presenting the main content of your work. It is up to you whether you prepare a presentation, a handout or similar. Afterwards, the examiners will ask you questions about your work during the remaining 15 minutes. You will receive the report some time before the defense, so that you have the opportunity to take up comments from it in your defense.
