Markus Hertwig studied social sciences at Ruhr University Bochum. He was researcher at Ruhr Unversity and involved in several research projects about digitalization of the automotive industry, employee representation in Germany, and European labor relations. Between 2009 and 2015, he was researcher at the University Duisburg-Essen, at the Institute for Work, Skills and Training (IAQ). In 2011, he was visiting researcher at the City University of New York (CUNY) at the J. S. Murphy Institute for Worker Education and Labor Studies, where he conducted investigations on non-trade union employee represenation. Since 2015, he is full professor of sociology at Chemnitz Technical University.

Prof. Hertwig is a member of the board of the German Industrial Relations Association (GIRA) and is a member of numerous professional associations and scientific associations or networks, such as the German Society for Sociology, the Network of Social Science Automotive Research (GERPISA) and the New Institutionalism Network.
