On April 30, 2021, the MethodenKompetenzZentrum (German) at the Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences at Chemnitz University of Technology, together with the faculty’s newly founded Open Science Initiative, will host a one-day interdisciplinary online conference in English. The theme of the conference is "Open Science and Replicability in the Behavioural and Social Sciences" (https://www.tu-chemnitz.de/hsw/mkz/OpenScienceCon.php). There is no fee to attend.
Paper proposals are still being accepted for the online conference. The call for papers is open until March 21, 2021, and submissions can be emailed to methodenkompetenzzentrum@hsw.tu-chemnitz.de.
Increasing importance of Open Science
The main goals of the conference are to hold an unbiased and open discussion about Open Science, to exchange experiences, to network, and to present work, initiatives, and developments in this field. It aims to respond to the increasing importance of Open Science in scientific practice in the wake of a new digital scientific culture and this culture’s impact on how science is carried out.
The conference not only is aimed at those interested in and newcomers to the topic of Open Science, but also at experienced scientists.
Two keynotes - Open Science creates new opportunities for better research
The conference will be framed by two keynotes – one by Prof. Simini Vazire, Ph.D (School of Psychological Sciences at the University of Melbourne, Australia) and the other from Prof. Dr. Katrin Auspurg (Department of Quantitative Social Research at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich).
The practice of Open Science is not only leads to the increased possibility of access (Open Access) to research data, research literature, and research processes including statistical analysis steps. Open Science also has the potential to impact basic procedures in peer review processes as well as in terms of transparency and replicability of research processes and results.
In addition, Open Science also opens up opportunities for international collaboration even during an ongoing research process and for bringing together a large number of researchers to work on a common research question (crowdsourcing).
The online conference "Open Science and Replicability in the Behavioral and Social Sciences" will provide a platform for exchange.

- Replication Crisis and Open Science
Background - MethodenKompetenzZentrum
The MethodenKompetenzZentrum (Methodological Competence Center, MKZ) at the Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences has set itself the task of providing advice and assistance for methodological challenges. It is coordinated by Prof. Dr. Jochen Mayerl, holder of the Professorship of Sociology with Specialization in Empirical Social Research, and research assistant Britta Maskow. Founding members of the Open Science Initiative are Prof. Dr. Anja Strobel, Dean of the Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences and holder of the Professorship of Personality Psychology and Assessment, and Prof. Dr. Frank Asbrock, holder of the Professorship of Social Psychology at Chemnitz University of Technology.
