How can computer simulations contribute to a better understanding of resilience? Taking the seemingly impossible into account - is that possible? In addition to responsiveness and robustness, resilience is an essential approach for preparing companies for rather unlikely or almost impossible events. These so-called "grey and black swans" are difficult to capture because of their dynamic nature and extreme consequences. Mathematical models and empirical methods therefore often do not contribute to an understanding of resilience. A recent article by the Chair of Factory Planning and Intralogistics (Head: Prof. Matthias Thürer) at Chemnitz University of Technology in the "International Journal of Production Research" on the use of computer simulations to gain an understanding of resilience now shows ways in which resilience can be researched. The paper "Assessing supply chain responsiveness, resilience and robustness (Triple-R) by computer simulation: a systematic review of the literature" was named "Top Trending Article 2024" by the editors of the journal.
"Energy shortages, pandemics, wars - if you take a closer look at global developments, you will quickly see that there have been a number of events in recent years that were previously considered rather unlikely. Such events can cause companies to experience great turbulence," says Thürer, adding: "Specifically complex supply chains are subject to risks. Resilience means that companies protect themselves as best as possible against potential shortages and disruptions. Computer simulations help to identify and evaluate risks and to adapt strategies to changing conditions. There is a broad literature in this area.” The award-winning paper provides an excellent overview of this.
