Prof. Dr. Anna Amelina
Anna Amelina is a sociologist and professor for Intercultural Communication at the Chemnitz University of Technology. During the last years, the aim of her research has been to develop and specify domination-critical approaches in the area of transnational, gendered, and migranticized social relations and inequalities. In the field of social theory and cultural sociology, Amelina has contributed to the critique of methodological nationalism and has applied a transnational lens to assemblage theory, which opens up ways to study relations of domination beyond the idea of the static national container. Building on the ‘reflexive turn’ in migration studies, Amelina’s publications also question the naturalization of the national in migration studies and develop the ‘doing migration approach’ that identifies specific performative utterances and routinized practices that turn people into ‘migrants’. Being constantly interested in gender relations, Anna Amelina has focused her research on gendered care practices and patriarchal logics of citizenship, which she has studied using the anti-essentialist understanding of intersectionality. Furthermore, calling for a nuanced understanding of the relations of domination, Amelina addresses the nexus of postsocialist and postcolonial relations. Of particular importance in this regard is her idea of a multiplicity of coloniality/ies and their historic-specific situatedness, which she uses, among other topics, to study gendered and sexualized violence in the context of war. In sum, Amelina pleads for a combination of a variety of critical stances (poststructuralist, decolonial, intersectional, post-Marxist) to understand and criticize relations of domination around citizenship, migration-making, collective memories, and gender relations.
