Customer acceptance of electromobility for driving with increased range demands - longe-distance commuters

Duration

12/2012-07/2015

Topic

ActiveEBased on the limited range of electric vehicles (EV) current research projects in the area of electromobility have mainly focused on the urban setting. Longer trips with the need of more than one battery charge impose new and unresolved challenges on drivers concerning acceptance and handling the range problem. To address this issue a field test is conducted with five determined 12-week periods beginning in 2013 and ending in 2014, in which 15 drivers in each period get the possibility to drive a BMW ActiveE. As to the user setting the user selection focuses on long-range commuters, which drive a daily route to work from 40 to 100 km maximum or otherwise drive at least 90 km per day and hence fall within the limited range area at a regular basis.

The project „Kundenakzeptanz Elektromobilität bei erhöhter Reichweitenanforderung – Langstreckenpendler“ (Customer acceptance of electromobility for driving with increased range demands - longe-range commuters) is embedded in the joint project “Elektromobilität verbindet” (electromobility connects) involving the states of Saxony and Bavaria, and here brings together the competencies of BMW Group, Chemnitz University of Technology and Stadtwerke Leipzig (Public Utility). The working is orientated to the projects and insights from previous studies (MINI E Berlin powered by Vattenfall, MINI E V2.0, BMW ActiveE Berlin).

The main goals are:

  • investigation of the potential of EVs for long-range commuters with the necessity of recharging at the workplace
  • analysis of user acceptance, driving behavior, handling with range, adaptation and learning effects, and eco-driving-strategies
  • investigation of the user perspective to different recuperation designings (braking energy recovery)
  • insights to the charging infrastructure, charging process and possible retroactions to power supply

Focus areas of the professorship of Cognitive and Engineering Psychology within the project BMW ActiveE Leipzig

  • Conception and implementation of the user study including user selection
  • Pre-processing and analysis of data concerning user experience and user behaviour
