Following migration

Research initiative of the Chemnitz University of Technology opened forum for discussion: Consequences of refugee admission in Saxony

Research initiatives on refugee admission discussed in the Free State of Saxony: A transfer event of the Chemnitz University of Technology recently presented different research initiatives on the topic of flight and migration in Saxony. Aim of the event: to publicly present the research activities of the Chemnitz University of Technology in regard to refugee admission and to contribute to the networking, knowledge exchange and discussion between University and urban society. Impetus gave the research initiative “Flüchtlinge in Sachsen” (FiS) that is located at the Chemnitz University of Technology.

About 50 participants visited the interdisciplinary event, including students and regional actors from city administration, migration, social and youth work. Sarah Dietrich, research assistant in the Assistant Professorship Intercultural Education at the Chemnitz University of Technology, led through the program. The event was divided in two parts: the presentation of the research results and the introduction of the regional actors.

At first, junior professor Dr. Birgit Glorius presented her results on East-West-Differences regarding the attitude towards foreigners. That was followed by a speech from junior professor Ann-Christin Schondelmayer about the school integration of migrants in vocational areas. Additionally student Robinson Dörfel spoke about “Ziviler Ungehorsam zwischen haltloser Rhetorik und politischer Partizipation” and Anne Walther addressed the subject of neighborhoods of decentrally housed protection and asylum seekers. Graduate of the Chemnitz University of Technology Janine Eißner presented her Bachelor Thesis about daily challenges of educational staff with refugee children and Andy Schäfer introduced the student-project “Gesichter der Migration” that was initiated by Prof. Cecile Sandten and students of her Professorship of English Literature.

Afterwards, regional actors from “Flucht und Integration” took advantage of the opportunity to introduce themselves and their work in a short lecture. Including initiatives and associations such as “Arbeit und Leben Sachsen e.V.”, “Sächsischer Flüchtlingsrat e.V.”, „Save Me Chemnitz“, „AGIUA Migrationssozial- und Jugendarbeit e.V.“ and „Kommunalpolitisches Forum Sachsen e.V.“.

Finally, visitors could visit the posters exhibition. Six posters informed on current and completed research projects and invited to further discussion.

The event was financially supported through sponsorship money of the “Initiative Europastudien e.V.”, the StuRa of the Chemnitz University of Technology and the “Studentenwerk Chemnitz-Zwickau”. (Author: Nancy Lindner)
