For the first time in Technische Universität Chemnitz the Conference “Nanospectroscopy for Two-Dimensional Materials” took place between September 8th and 10th, 2015, which was organized by early stage researchers (ESR) and for ESR. The conference brought together young scientists to promote the exchange on the newest developments in the fabrication and applications of 2D materials, and their nanospectroscopic characterization.

Two-dimensional (2D) materials show outstanding material properties with enormous potential for applications in electronic and optoelectronic devices of the new generation. So that those applications could find its way to the market, it is necessary to develop cost-efficient protocols for fabrication of 2D materials and devices. In addition, it is essential to know and understand how these materials behave at the nanoscale. Optical spectroscopies provide rich information in material research. The new development in the spectroscopy field is nanospectroscopy, which allows obtaining the information with an unprecedented spatial resolution beyond the diffraction limit of light.

The conference was hosted by the Semiconductor Physics group (Prof. Dietrich R.T. Zahn) and organized by Evgeniya Sheremet (Solid Surfaces Analysis group), Dr. Raul D. Rodriguez (Semiconductor Physics group), and Dr. Teresa Madeira Amorim (University of Lisbon, Portugal), the organisers all being young researchers. The ESR for ESR conference format was initiated by a Horizon 2020 European COST Action. The COST Action MP1302 "Nanospectroscopy" builds a strong European network in the field of Nanospectroscopy, aiming at expanding and developing the application of nanospectroscopic methods. The COST Action support included not only partial conference funding, but also individual participants by funding their travel expenses. The COST action thus allowed not only the participation of almost 60 researchers, but also inviting of 7 speakers including such renowned scientists as Andrea Ferrari (Cambridge Graphene Centre, UK) and Vladimir Falko (The National Graphene Institute, University of Manchester, UK).

The conference gave the participants deep insights in the latest research, as well as the opportunity and time for networking. It was closed with a round table where potential collaborations were discussed, that will undoubtedly lead to new research ideas and collaborations.
