The RoboSchool as a springboard into the study

Annemarie Thalheim studies in the second term Bachelor in Medical Engineering at Technische Universität Chemnitz – Her path there has been guided by the RoboSchool project

In the final stages of school education, the question of receiving subsequent vocational training is often increasingly oppressive. Graduates often agree with respect only to a rough direction in which they will complete their studies later. To gain practical insights into various subject areas prior to the start of the study is all the more important. In addition to school and voluntary internships in the preferred areas of activity, university projects offer a great way to early define the own professional area of interest. One of these projects – the RoboSchool – specifically targets at all those who are interested in the areas of natural sciences, engineering and computer science and is regularly held at Technische Universität Chemnitz.

Annemarie Thalheim, now a student in the second term, first came in contact with TU Chemnitz within the German-Turkish RoboSchool in June 2014. Due to the indication of a teacher, the graduate of the Humboldt-Gymnasium Radeberg became aware of the project and took advantage during her free time to gain practical insights into the topics of robotics after the successful completion of the high school. In addition to the theoretical foundations, for example in the areas of electrical engineering and computer science, also an active framework program was offered during the RoboSchool. “Among other things, we were able to attend a guided tour in Chemnitz, got an insight into the everyday university life and could see the big robots in action at the Volkswagen plant“, said Thalheim. Thanks to this insight, the choice of her study location fell on Chemnitz, where she currently studies Bachelor in Medical Engineering. The decision for choosing the medical study has strengthened due to the practical experience gained during the RoboSchool, too. Looking back at the first study term at Technische Universität Chemnitz, Annemarie Thalheim finds words of praise: “The university is not as large and anonymous, like other universities and offers a good teacher ratio.“ Even the up to now mediated course content, which predominantly includes the mathematical and physical basics is very interesting. In addition to the everyday university life, there are many possibilities to create a pleasing balance. Thus, Thalheim is engaged in her spare time, inter alia, in the Evangelist Student Community Chemnitz (ESG Chemnitz).

Although the study is initially in the foreground, the prospective medical engineer has already put a specific career goal. Following her studies, Annemarie Thalheim plans her professional future as a technical assistant in a hospital.

The RoboSchool will be held again this year from 7 to 12 June 2015. More information as well as information on registering for the event can be found here: https://www.tu-chemnitz.de/qpl/tu4u/studieninteressierte/roboschool/
