Fibre-plastic composites in the focus of international teaching

Representatives of TU Chemnitz held lecture at the Sirindhorn International Thai-German Graduate School of Engineering of King Mongkut`s University of Technology North Bangkok

The cooperation between Technische Universität Chemnitz and King Mongkut`s University of Technology North Bangkok (KMUTNB) exists since almost nine years and is mainly applied for education and further training and the exchange of researchers, lecturers and students, especially in the field of engineering sciences. From 5th till 9th May 2014 some representatives of TU Chemnitz guested at the Sirindhorn International Thai-German Graduate School of Engineering (TGGS), an Institution of King Mongkut`s University of Technology North Bangkok (KMUTNB).

In order to intensify the joint training, Prof. Dr. Lothar Kroll and Dr. Isabelle Roth of the Department of Lightweight Structures and Polymer Technology together with Dr. Jürgen Tröltzsch from the Cluster of Excellence (MERGE) travelled to Bangkok, to give a lecture to 20 students on "Fibre-reinforced Plastic Composites for High Performance Applications". This lecture on fibre-plastic composites dealt with all relevant topics of composite mechanics, matrix and fibre systems, semi-finished products and production technologies as well as fibre composite construction. These are fundamental issues in the research of MERGE, whose goal is a fusion technology in lightweight construction. By fusing large-scale enabling technologies, there should be possible a resource-efficient production and use of lightweight structures.

Also for the future international Master Program "Merge Technologies for Resource Efficiency", which is currently being prepared by the Research Clusters of Excellence together with the Central Administration of TU Chemnitz, this lecture series has an important meaning. "For us it was a good experience. Lecture is supposed to soon be held in English at TU Chemnitz. All the students enjoyed it greatly and successfully completed the examination", says Dr. Jürgen Tröltzsch.

The stay at the TGGS, which emerged from the collaboration between the KMUTNB and the RWTH Aachen, also served to exchange with representatives of the University Management on site. Besides, a meeting with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Suchart Siengchin, Vice-President for Research and Promotion, Dr. Arisara Chaikittiratana, the Head of the Faculty of Mechanics and Aerospace Engineering, and the employees of TU Chemnitz spent a pleasant evening with the President of KMUTNB, Prof. Dr. Teravuti Boonyasopon.
