Efficient Mathematical Methods in Focus
Faculty of Mathematics to host German premiere of International Conference on Preconditioning Techniques for Scientific and Industrial Applications from June 8 to 10, 2022

From June 8 to 10, 2022, the Faculty of Mathematics at Chemnitz University of Technology will host the International Conference on Preconditioning Techniques for Scientific and Industrial Applications, which was held in Minneapolis and Vancouver in previous years. This year's conference is dedicated to efficient mathematical methods that are particularly important in simulating complex applications in science, business and industry. "The efficiency of many algorithms in industry but also artificial intelligence often depends on a large number of system parameters, which result in the evaluation of the complex models on the computer being time-consuming and cost-intensive. With suitably constructed mathematical objects, the preconditioners, it becomes possible to calculate these very models much faster and very accurately," says Prof. Dr. Martin Stoll, head of the professorship of Scientific Computing at Chemnitz University of Technology.
The conference in Chemnitz is dedicated to a variety of different areas. These include examples from applications, such as simulation in films or materials science, and the presentation of new customized techniques. Furthermore, the exploitation of modern hardware architectures, such as graphics processing units (GPUs), plays an increasingly important role and mathematical methods have to be adapted and further developed for this purpose. In this context, the lecturers will present the latest methods and findings and will have an intensive exchange with researchers from Germany and abroad.
The Preconditioning Series was launched more than 20 years ago in Minneapolis. After stops in Oxford, Hong Kong and Toulouse, the conference is being held in Germany for the first time. Originally planned for 2021, it will now take place in the new university library of Chemnitz University of Technology.
