Bachelor's and Master's Theses

Information on Bachelor's and Master's Theses:

The Junior Professorship for Empirical Economic Research offers the opportunity to supervise theses in the fields of Development Economics, Macroeconomics (especially Growth and Development), Institutional Economics, European Integration, and East Asian Economies. The thesis should generally have an empirical focus and can be written in German or English.

Interested students are invited to approach the Junior Professorship with their own topic proposals. The choice of topics should ideally be related to one of the following research focuses:

  • Growth slowdowns in emerging market economies (concept of the "Middle-Income Trap")
  • Institutions and economic development, interactions between institutions and other growth factors
  • Income distribution and inequality
  • European integration process, especially convergence processes within the EU
  • Measurement of human capital and the role of education for economic growth
  • Impacts of digitization and automation on economic growth and the job market
  • The Chinese economy, development strategies of East Asian countries in comparison

In addition to the proposed research focuses, other related topics may also be considered if agreed upon with the supervising person in advance.

Procedure

Please contact the Junior Professorship approximately four to six weeks before the planned start of the working period and provide one to two possible topic proposals. In your inquiry, please include an overview of your academic achievements (academic transcript from the examination office).

We will then arrange a meeting to discuss the research question in terms of relevance and feasibility. Please come prepared for this meeting (specific idea for the research question, initial exploration of scientific literature). Subsequently, you will create a one- to two-page exposé (idea and development of the research question, presentation of the approach or methodology) and a preliminary outline of the thesis. These should be coordinated with the supervising person.

Upon approval by the supervising person, the final title will be determined, and registration with the examination office will take place.
