Focusing on Joining Technology, Materials and Surfaces

19th Material Technology Colloquium at the Chemnitz University of Technology from March 16 to 17, 2017

In the central auditorium building of the Chemnitz University of Technology, Reichenhainer Straße 90, the 19th Material Technology Colloquium (WTK) will take place on March 16 and 17, 2017. Host is the Institute of Materials Science and Engineering (IWW) of the Chemnitz University of Technology. The institute is represented by Prof. Dr. Thomas Lampke (Chair of Materials and Surface Engineering), Prof. Dr. Guntram Wagner (Chair of Composite Materials) and Martin F.-X. Wagner (Chair of Materials Science).

The main focus lies on current research results of materials, surface and joining technologies that are presented and discussed in presentations and posters. The complete lecture program is available online. The registration of poster contributions for the Colloquium is open until February 24, 2017.

Students are cordially invited to participate in the grand opening, the survey lecture and the Keynote lecture “Work of the Future”, taking place prior to the evening event. No costs arise.

From fundamental research to application

The expert audience will be introduced to basic but also application-related lectures of the following fields:

  • Galvanic Metal Deposition/ Anodization
  • Thermic Coating Technology
  • Lightweight Construction Materials / Composite Materials / Material Compounds
  • Joining with focus on Solid State Techniques
  • Additive Production / Ultrafine Granulate Materials
  • Material Testing / Fatigue / Damage
  • Heat Treatment

The respective sessions are introduced by high-quality plenary speeches. For example, long-time President of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, Prof. Dr. Hans-Jörg Bullinger, will hold a lecture as a Keynote-Speaker regarding “Work of the Future” at the end of the first conference day. The subsequent evening event will take place in the “Bar Ausgleich” in the cafeteria of the University.

Additionally to the scientific program, speakers from the industry can hold five-minute impulse lectures informing about their business and products.

As in the previous year, the Colloquium is thematically expanded by the advanced training project “ELCH” (electrochemical coating) as a side-event. The advanced training project provides current knowledge on electroplating technology that is with a 25% market share one of the most important industrial techniques for the refining and functionalization of surfaces. Participants receive an introduction to electroplating as well to the basic processes happening on anode and cathode while alloy disposition.

Further topics are:

  • Automation of Electroplating Processes
  • Innovative Approaches to the Development of Electrolytes and the Control of Galvanization Baths
  • Bath and Coating Analysis with modern Characterization Methods
  • Pulse Plating

Participants of the advanced training project can apply conventional and modern methods for the manufacturing and characterization of coatings in experimental work.
