NMUN 2016

NMUN-Delegation of the TU Chemnitz

National Model United Nations (NMUN) – a student project of the Department of International Politics

The National Model United Nations (NMUN) conference traces its origins to 1923 as a simulation of the League of Nations. The conference adopted its current format after the creation of the United Nations (UN) in 1946.

Over 6 000 university students from all over the world come to New York City each spring to discuss current global issues. In this case groups of students are organized as delegations and are assigned to play the role of Member States of the UN. Moreover, delegations enjoy the proximity to Permanent Missions to the UN and NMUN’s New York conferences culminate at UN Headquarters.

To effectively simulate their roles as diplomats, participants in NMUN must learn the history of their assigned state, the UN-history, the committee structure and rules of the UN, and the current perspective on global affairs espoused by their assigned state. By participating in NMUN, students get the opportunity to change their perspective towards local and international issues, train public speaking as well as their diplomatic and negotiation skills, and gain intercultural experience.

Since 2004, delegations of selected students from various fields of study in Chemnitz are participating in NMUN. TU Chemnitz is the only Saxonian University daring to face this challenge each year. Become a part of it!

We are Chad!

The very first ideas of this year’s delegation regarding the country we would like to represent made it clear that our focus was on African and Middle Eastern countries. Therefore we decided early on that our preferences were going to be in these regions. Due to numerous crises and problems such as the rapidly increasing population or the imminent threat of radical Islamic groups it is a new and challenging task for us students to empathize with this situation.

We are looking forward to this new experience and accept the challenge with great motivation! We’re pleased with the honor of representing the Central African country of Chad at the NMUN-Conference taking place in New York in March 2016. In this regard we are especially happy that with Chad we will be representing a current member of the UN Security Council – the organization’s highest decision-making body – for the first time.

At the beginning of our preparations we are intensively studying the history, culture, politics etc. of “our“ country. That way we will be able to represent the position of Chad regarding the respective topics at NMUN 2016 as realistically as possible. In addition to our weekly sessions in Chemnitz we will gain further experience with the so-called MUN-simulations in Hamburg and Chemnitz. All these preparations will help us educate our understanding of political decision-making and therefore effectively train our diplomatic negotiating skills for the Conference in New York.
