Sustainable Campus

Sustainable campus

The Sustainable Campus Square Design Initiative enables further design of the Chemnitz University of Technology's campus square between the refectory, Weinhold Building and lecture hall building - redesigned as a central hub on the Reichenhainer Straße part of the university.

This project is co-financed by tax funds on the basis of the budget passed by the Saxon State Parliament.

Ideas competition

On 28 June 2019, the Rectorate of Chemnitz University of Technology initiated an ideas competition for the design of the campus square with the circular letter 27/2019, for which up to 100,000 euros in material funding is available. A total of 130 ideas on the topics of seating, creating shade, greenery, activities/sports, water facilities and miscellaneous were received and pre-structured by staff from the Department of Building and Technology. Since December 2019, these have been discussed and debated with Matthias Junghänel, Head of the Department of Civil Engineering and Technology, employees of the department, student representatives, senior employees of the city, Department 6, Urban Development and Construction, the Chair of the Agenda Committee, senior employees of the Student Union and other interested stakeholders. Potential concepts are currently being developed. Due to the pandemic, further consultations with the mayor of the city of Chemnitz, relevant city development staff, the Studentenwerk, the SIB, interested students and stakeholders were postponed in April and continued in August 2020. Discussions with the city of Chemnitz and interested stakeholders were continued in January 2021. The jointly developed overall concept was presented and discussed with interested parties and the university public in July 2021. The Berlin architects' office was on site in July 2021 to locate the planned seating elements in concrete terms.  In addition to the first sporting acquisitions, such as table tennis tables, kubb and boccia, in 2020, the goal is to realise the other elements in 2021 and to enliven the campus square.

Campus areas become colourful butterfly meadows

TU Chemnitz participates in the state-wide participation campaign "Puppenstuben gesucht - Flowering meadows for Saxony's butterflies".

The flowering meadow area at the university is growing

Special thanks go to our employees of the Department of Construction and Technology as well as our colleagues from the SIB Chemnitz for their commitment and wonderful support!

The following points should be noted with regard to the flowering meadows:

  • Flowering meadows are quasi small nature reserves and provide habitats for insects: Please stay away, do not enter
  • Flowering meadows are not rubbish dumps: Please dispose of rubbish properly and remove rubbish from the meadows.

Pollination by insects: Economic benefit probably far higher than assumed
