OPAL-Kurs
Olav Hellwig (E-Mail: olav.hellwig@…), Fabian Samad (E-Mail: fabian.samad@…) and Peter Heinig (E-Mail: peter.heinig@…)
Content of the Magnetism II module (Methods and applications of magnetic materials):
The focus of this module is on magnetism and magnetic materials of thin film systems and nanostructures, as well as their applications in the field of data storage and sensor technology (spintronics).
• magnetic thin film systems and nanostructures: fabrication, characterization, and magnetic properties
• Introduction to magnetic characterization methods
• Magnetization dynamics and resonance effects
• Magnetic coupling effects
• Magnetoresistance effects
• Magnetic data storage: hard disk and magnetic random access memory (MRAM)
Organizational:
In the WS 2025/26 we offer the Magnetism II lecture (“Methods and applications of magnetic materials”) as well as the corresponding Magnetism II exercise class in a hybrid (in person/online mixed) format.
We will provide weekly lecture recordings, each about 90 minutes in average length. Access to these recordings will occur via our Magnetism II webpage. You should listen to the weekly lecture recordings at your own convenience until the next weekly live feedback session at our designated “Magnetism II” lecture time slot, currently scheduled for Tuesday at 9:15 in room 2/W066 (C25.066). During these in presence feedback sessions we will do a short quiz about the main topics of the previous recorded lecture and you will have the opportunity to ask questions about the lecture content. We can then go to the corresponding slides of the lecture and discuss your questions in detail and hopefully resolve any issues.
The dates and times for the exam will be organized via the OPAL course. If you encounter any problems with the exam registration or want to change the exam date, please contact Peter Heinig ( peter.heinig@…).
Important Notice:
Often it is not possible to avoid time slot conflicts completely for every possible timetable constellation, in particular since this class is offered to Physics, AFM and SeKo students in parallel.
For the case you are interested to attend this lecture/exercise class and obtain credit for it, but you have a conflict in your lecture schedule with the current time slot and thus are not able to attend the first session on 14.10. at 9:15, then please contact Peter Heinig prior to the session via Email ( peter.heinig@…) and let him know. Often it is possible to adjust the time slot of the lecture/exercise class in the first couple of lecture weeks (when we know who is interested in attending the lecture) to avoid an overlap with other lectures. So please let me know if this is the case for you and we will try to adjust the lecture/exercise class time slot correspondingly.
