Welcome to the Junior Professorship Intercultural Practice with a Focus on Digital Cultures
Main areas of research and teaching
The research and teaching topics of the junior professorship address the reconfiguration of everyday life in a postdigital field of action, especially on the topic of migration. The postdigital field of action is understood as the continuity of everyday life in "offline" and "online" fields of action, which are not to be understood dichotomously.
The junior professorship is structured in three thematic areas:
- Postdigital (inter)culturality and social E-maginaries
- Postdigital intercultural practices in the context of migration and internet-mediated interactions.
- E-maginaries of coloniality in social networks
Within the Research Lab on Postdigital (Inter)Culturality, data for the study of (inter)cultural practices, postdigital cultures, digital migration studies and coloniality in social media are observed, collected, analysed and archived, while qualitative methods for the study of the postdigital context are further developed.
The junior professorship coordinates internationalisation and Erasmus+ affairs.

Upcoming Events:
On 15 October 2025, Jun.-Prof. Dr. Yolanda López García will give a guest lecture titled "Habitar el ‘entre’: reflexiones críticas sobre interculturalidad desde la experiencia migrante" at the Universidad de Guadalajara (Mexico). The lecture takes place as part of the Seminario de Comunicación Intercultural of the División de Estudios de la Cultura Regional, Departamento de Humanidades, Artes y Culturas Extranjeras, at the Centro Universitario de Los Lagos.
Abstract (English)
Migration processes transform not only places of living but also imaginaries, identities, and ways of relating to the world. In her guest lecture "Habitar el ‘entre’: reflexiones críticas sobre interculturalidad desde la experiencia migrante", Jun.-Prof. Dr. Yolanda López García offers a situated reflection that connects her academic trajectory with her personal migration experience in order to critically rethink interculturality.
Drawing on her research areas — migration, social imaginaries, (post)digital intercultural practices, and critical intercultural communication — as well as her work at Technische Universität Chemnitz, she shows from a praxeological perspective how the “in-between” can be understood as a dynamic constellation of practices in which tensions are negotiated, subjectivities are reconfigured, and theory and practice are brought into dialogue.
Additionally, the lecture introduces students of the Centro Universitario de Los Lagos, Universidad de Guadalajara (Mexico) to Technische Universität Chemnitz, opening new perspectives for intercultural learning and academic exchange.
Abstract (Español)

Guest Lecture: Criticality, Interculturality and Decoloniality – A Southern Praxis.
As part of the course "Intercultural Communication and Competence: Critical Perspectives" at the Department of Intercultural Communication, the Junior Professorship “Intercultural Praxis with a Focus on Digital Culture” is delighted to invite you to a guest lecture by Prof. Dr. Benachour Saidi (Mohamed First University, Morocco), visiting scholar at the Junior Professorship.
In this lecture, Prof. Dr. Saidi explores the epistemic intersections between criticality, interculturality, and decoloniality, challenging their conceptual boundaries, tensions, and implications within knowledge production. He argues that discourses around interculturality often remain depoliticized, relying on tokenized forms of epistemic diversity, and calls for a more critical, decolonial engagement with intercultural praxis.
