Magnetismus I (Vorlesung)

Vorlesung Magnetismus I - Lecture Magnetism I

Prof. Dr. Olav Hellwig (E-Mail: )

Content:

The focus of this elective module is the magnetism of (ferro) magnetic materials, its origin and the phenomena resulting from it. The lectures will cover the following topics:

  • introduction to and history of magnetic materials
  • electro-magnetism with a focus on magneto-statics and magnetic materials
  • quantum mechanical foundations of magnetic materials
  • from magnetic moments in atoms and ions to the magnetism in solid state physics
  • spontaneous magnetization of magnetic materials (ferromagnetism)
  • mico-magnetic energies of ferromagnetic materials: demagnetization, exchange and anisotropy
  • magnetic field reversal and domain formation

Organisational:

In the WS 2022/2023 we offer the Magnetism I lecture (or “Grundlagen magnetischer Materialien”, i.e. “Basic introduction to magnetic materials”) as well as the corresponding Magnetism I exercise class either in a purely online or hybrid (in person/online mixed) format.

The current plan is to provide weekly lecture recordings, each about 90 minutes in average length. Access to these recordings will be provided via our Magnetism I webpage. You should listen to the weekly lecture recordings at your own convenience until the next weekly live feedback session at our designated “Magnetism I” lecture time slot, currently scheduled for Fridays at 7:30 AM im Raum P031 (C60.031). We will discuss at the first session if the live feedback sessions can be moved to a more convenient time slot. During these in presence feedback sessions we will do a short quiz about the main topics of the previous recorded lecture and you will have the opportunity to ask questions about the lecture content. We can then go to the corresponding slides of the lecture and discuss your questions in detail and hopefully resolve any issues.

Please bring your questions and suggestions to the first session on Friday, 14.10. at 7:30 AM, where I will provide more information about the content and the format of the class.

Update: Please note that on 14.10.2022 it was decided to have live in-person feedback sessions weekly from 8:00-9:00 AM in P031 starting on 21.10.2022.

Update 9.12.2022: In general agreement it was decided to move the feedback sessions to Mondays 11:00-12:00. Meeting point Monday 12.12. is at the seminar rooms in the entrance area of the physics buidling. If those rooms are all occupied, we will move to the MagFunMat meeting room P112.

Important Notice:

Often it is not possible to avoid time-slot conflicts completely for every possible timetable constellation, in particular since this class is offered to physics, AFM and SeKo students in parallel.

For the case you are interested to attend this lecture/exercise class and obtain credit for it, but you have a conflict in your lecture schedule with the current time slot and thus are not able to attend the first feedback session meeting on 14.10. at 7:30 AM, then please contact me prior to the first meeting via Email ( ) and let me know. Often it is possible to adjust the time slot of the lecture/exercise class in the first couple of lecture weeks (when we know who is interested in attending the lecture) to avoid an overlap with other lectures. So please let me know if this is the case for you and we will try to adjust the lecture/exercise class time slot correspondingly.

For the case that the lecturer or some of the students are not able to participate in the in-person sessions of this class any more due to Corona, then we have the option to run the sessions virtually in the following BBB-teleconference room:

Access the online lecture

Please let me know when this becomes necessary for you.
