The Wide Landscape of Neuromorphic Computing: An Overview, Challenges, and Opportunities

General Information

Inspired by principles of biological computation found in the brain, the field of neuromorphic computing develop new hardware and software approaches, usable for example in AI applications or robotics. By using so-called spiking neurons, it is aimed to develop more energy-efficient solutions compared to traditional von-Neumann hardware, i.e., CPUs and GPUs. In the past years, many different neuromorphic chip designs have been proposed often with strong limitiations on implementable functions. The course is designed to give participants an insight into this exciting field of research, therefore we will discuss the theoretical background, highlight potential limitations, but also benefits of neuromorphic computing platforms. The participants will then apply in small groups the gained knowledge using sample tasks.

The course is open to Bachelor's and Master's level students as well as company employees.
Nevertheless, good Python programming skills are required. The course language is English.
Active participation is mandatory.

The first lecture will be on 15.04.2026.
