Project Description
The ISIMON project focuses on developing the next generation of smart, self-sensing fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) vessels for high-pressure hydrogen storage. These innovative vessels are designed not only to store hydrogen safely, but also to monitor their structural condition throughout manufacturing and operation.
At the core of the technology are nanocomposite-based sensors that are permanently integrated into the FRP structure during manufacturing. These sensors enable real-time measurements during fabrication and continuous structural health monitoring throughout the operational lifetime of the structure.
ISIMON combines advanced sensor technology, composite manufacturing, modelling, simulation and machine learning. Topology optimisation supports efficient material utilisation, while machine-learning-based approaches contribute to early damage detection and long-term structural performance assessment.
Through improved structural monitoring, enhanced safety and reduced maintenance requirements, ISIMON aims to contribute to reliable and sustainable high-pressure hydrogen storage technologies for future mobility and industrial applications.
