Module Number 563030
Type and SWS Lecture: 2 SWS, Exercise: 2 SWS
Execution Winter Semester
Contents Basic knowledge of the computer science field of databases is taught. This includes (excerpt):
  • Architecture of database systems
  • Technical background of data storage
  • Methods for querying databases
  • Database models (hierarchical, network, relational)
  • Database design criteria
  • Concurrent access to databases
  • Data protection and data security
The lecture does not focus on a specific database system but discusses the topics in a general form. Exercises complement the lecture.
Qualification Goals After attending the lecture, the essential components of a database system are known. Students should be able to use the query language SQL to pose simple queries to a relational database and roughly assess the use of database systems in terms of a cost/benefit analysis.
Literature Standard literature, e.g., Date, Schlageter, Stucky, etc. - additional literature will be mentioned in the lecture
