Long-time University Library Director received the award in acknowledgement of her outstanding merits for the benefit of Chemnitz University of Technology

For recognition of her particular engagement and in acknowledgement of her outstanding merits for the benefit of Chemnitz University of Technology, the Director of the University Library, Angela Malz, was awarded with the Honorary Medal of Chemnitz University of Technology. The President, Prof. Dr. Gerd Strohmeier, handed over the medal within the retirement celebration on March 26, 2026. “Angela Malz has led the University Library in an outstanding manner and generated a number of successes”, the President said. For this reason, it is a great honor and a particular pleasure for him to confer her the highest award of Chemnitz University of Technology. The president liked to quote a citation from an article issued only a few days ago by Berliner Zeitung: “The University Library is supposed to belong to those locations of the academic sphere which are historically most worth seeing and which should not shy the competition with Oxford, Cambridge or Stanford. One should have seen it or, even better, should have studied there. An assessment delighting Angela Malz and her Library Team as well.

Angela Malz is working at Chemnitz University of Technology resp. her predecessors already since 1984 – at first as librarian and later as directorate assistant. In 2006 she was engaged as managing director of the University Library, since September 2010 she is her Director. Already in 2006, Chemnitz University Library was considered, according to the Library Index (BIX), as most efficient University Library in Germany. In addition, the University Library was at the forefront with regard to the usage of electronic media. The engagement of the University Library for more openness in science and society – particularly on the field of Open Access – was honored i.a. in the years 2016 and 2020 with the “Open Library Badge”. Since 2013, Malz is a core participant and moderator of the “Literary Quintet”, an event format of the University Library jointly with the Professorshjp of Modern German and Comparative Literature Studies and the Student Representatives of the Faculty of Humanities. The most challenging task for Malz was the merging of the former Library sites in the “Old Spinnig Mill”-building. After five years of reconstruction works, the new University Library opened on October 1, 2020. This was preceded by the moving of around 1.2 million books and the major part of comprehensive archival material of the University. In 2025, the University Library participated in a varied manner in the Chemnitz Capital of Culture-year. Malz was involved in many projects as well as in an endless number of events happening at the University Library. As outstanding networker, she was always looking for connections with many institutions at Chemnitz, among them the City Library, the City Theaters and a number of museums. Malz liked to tell stories from the history of the building during her guided tours through the Library and from the successful development the University Library has taken.

„This award makes me very proud and it belongs also to my team and my former colleagues”, Malz says subsequent to the conferment of the Honorary Medal. Even though she will leave the University Library in a few days, she will remain faithful to her University. “For this reason, I have already registered in the alumni-database of Chemnitz University of Technology.”

Keyword: Honorary Medal of Chemnitz University of Technology

In order to award persons for their particular engagement or outstanding merits, there are several options at Chemnitz University of Technology. In addition to the Honorary Doctorate and the merit of an Honorary Senate Member, also the Honorary Medal of Chemnitz University of Technology is conferred. This Medal was handed over for the first time on October 9, 2007 to its Royal Highness Princess from Thailand Maha Chakri Sirindhorn who engaged in the networking of King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology North Bangkok as well as other universities in the country with Chemnitz University. In total, this Honorary Medal was conferred to 18 persons until now. It was manufactured at the State Porcelain Manufactory Meißen.

Call for participation in a short linguistic survey by Chemnitz University of Technology – no specialist knowledge needed

Christmas time is a season of wonder, miracles and nostalgia. The perfect time to snuggle up and read some fairy tales or watch some fairy tale films again. But how well do you actually know the famous stories by the brothers Grimm? Christina Sanchez-Stockhammer, professor of English and Digital Linguistics at Chemnitz University of Technology, wants to find out what speakers of the English language remember about some of the most famous fairy tales. For example, what does the evil queen in “Snow White” ask when she wants to know if she looks good? That’s why Sanchez-Stockhammer has launched a brief anonymous survey. It only takes a few minutes to complete and is available in English and German.

“But please don't look anything up! We are interested in what you remember spontaneously, and there are no right or wrong answers,” explains the linguist. “This will help us identify the most widely known English versions.” The results of the survey will be shared in publicly accessible formats – for example on Sanchez-Stockhammer’s podcast “Linguistics Behind the Scenes”.

Understanding Economics, Shaping the Future: The program provides in-depth knowledge of business administration, economics, and related fields such as law, statistics, and digitalization

The Faculty of Economics and Business Administration at Chemnitz University of Technology is establishing an English-language program starting in the 2025/26 winter semester. The master's program in Business & Economics (M.Sc.) offers graduates of bachelor's programs in economics and business administration an excellent foundation for careers in large and medium-sized companies with international networks, in academia, in administration, or in internationally active organizations.

“With the introduction of our English-language program, we aim to provide our students with the best possible conditions for a successful career in the global economy,” explains Prof. Dr. Michael Mayer, Dean of Studies for the program, adding: “We are convinced that this step will make our university even more attractive and promote exchange and collaboration on an international level. At the same time, we want to contribute positively to regional economic development.”

The program provides in-depth knowledge of business administration, economics, and related fields such as law, statistics, and digitalization. Students analyze economic relationships, learn to make entrepreneurial decisions, and deal with current challenges such as sustainable management, the impact of technology on business processes, and international trade structures.

The modular structure allows for personalized specialization. Additionally, with appropriate course selection, students can deepen their expertise in up to two of the following areas and have these specializations noted on their certificates:

Strategy, Leadership & Economics

Sustainability, Innovation & Marketing

Finance, Taxation and Controlling

Empirical and Applied Economics.

It is also possible to learn additional foreign languages.

The program is designed as a full-time on-campus study and can be completed in four semesters. Under certain conditions, part-time study over eight semesters is also available. This offers maximum flexibility – ideal for students balancing family commitments or initial work experience alongside their studies.

Set in a research-intensive, international environment with excellent contacts in business, politics, and academia, the program offers students the opportunity to thrive. Additionally, they benefit from the location in Chemnitz – a city in transition. As the European Capital of Culture 2025, Chemnitz offers a creative, urban setting with a high quality of life and many cultural opportunities.

The prerequisite for this master's program, which usually begins in the winter semester, is a bachelor's degree from Chemnitz University of Technology in economics and business administration. Under certain conditions, a bachelor's degree in Business Informatics, Business Administration and Engineering, or European Studies with Economical Sciences is also accepted as well as a professionally qualifying university degree in a program with equivalent content. The details are outlined in the study regulations.

Applications for the winter semester 2025/26 are still open for international applicants until July 15, 2025, via uni-assist (https://www.uni-assist.de/en/). German applicants can apply until September 19, 2025.

Elmar Brok reads from his bestseller in the University Library of Chemnitz University of Technology and talks with the audience on March 25, 2025

By the title „Don’t gamble Europa away! – Without the EU, Germany is a midget”, the long-experienced European parliamentarian Elmar Brok delivers in his book of the same title, published jointly with the journalist and biographer Peter Köpf, a warning: In a period of growing dangers by extremist tendencies, an anxious political center, emerging nationalisms and egoisms as well as external-political hotspots in the right neighborhood, a strong European Union capable of acting is, for national interest alone, of crucial importance for Germany. From those aspects, the authors derive concrete propositions for transition to more capability for acting, transparency, democracy and rule of law within the European Union. In addition, the book deals also with the political and economic consequences of the Trum/MusK-era.

Elmar Brok will read from this bestseller on March 25, 2025 at the IdeenReich in the University Library of Chemnitz University of Technology, Straße der Nationen 33. Subsequently, the audience may, moderated by PD Dr. Antje Nötzold, scientific staff member at the Professorship for International Relations at Chemnitz University of Technology and currently visiting professor at TU Dresden, start into a conversation dealing with the elaboration and its late-breaking political topic. The event starts at 6 pm. The reading is organized by the University Library jointly with the Chemnitz branch office of the Saxon Center for Political Education, the European Movement Saxony as well as the Union for Europe Saxony. The participation is free. A prior registration is not required.

Concerning the authors of the book „Don’t gamble Europa away! – Without the EU, Germany is a midget“:

Elmar Brok is a former German politician and Vice-President of Centrist Democrat International. From 1980 to 2019, he was member of the European Parliament and acted from 1999 until 2007 and from 2012 to 2017 as Chairman of the Committee of Foreign Affairs. He used to be Co-Chairman of the PPE-ministers for foreign affairs and member of the meetings of the PPE-heads of government in the run-up to EU-summits (European Council) for 20 years as well as member of the federal board of the CDU. Due to his expertise, the British daily paper „The Guardian” awarded to him the title “Master of the EUniverse”.

Peter Köpf is a journalist and author with comprehensive experience in political reporting and biographic literature. He elaborated several biographies, such as “The maverick Kurt Biedenkopf”, “Stoiber”, “The Burdas” and “The Mommsens”. Until 2021, he headed as editor-in-chief – jointly with the editor Theo Sommer – the international publications of the publisher Times Media, among them The Atlantic Times, The German Times and The Security Times.

Use your knowledge about the city’s sights, history and culture to cross a virtual-reality rope bridge, in a quiz developed by students and staff at Chemnitz University of Technology

Use your knowledge about the city’s sights, history and culture to cross a virtual-reality rope bridge, in a quiz developed by students and staff at Chemnitz University of Technology

What is the ‘Nischel’? How often was Karl Marx in Chemnitz? Which famous actor graduated from high school in Chemnitz? Which landmark inspired the shape of the ‘Fit’ dishwashing liquid bottle? These and more than 70 other quiz questions about the city's culture, history and sights were devised by students and staff at the Department of English and American Studies at Chemnitz University of Technology, so as to familiarise visitors with the 2025 European Capital of Culture in an entertaining way using a smartphone app – anywhere in the world, in English or German.

“The quiz is a level of the adventure learning app ‘Bridge of Knowledge’, which we developed to add a bit of fun and excitement to learning,” says Christina Sanchez-Stockhammer, Professor of English and Digital Linguistics at Chemnitz University of Technology. The aim of the game is to cross a virtual rope bridge by correctly answering ten multiple-choice questions in a row. “Otherwise you fall into the chasm – but that's actually quite fun, and you float in the air,” says Sanchez-Stockhammer. If a person answers incorrectly, they can learn the right answer and then immediately use their newly acquired knowledge on their next try. “And players with a fear of heights have the option to cross a calm river, without falling,” explains the linguist.

The quiz is for anyone who wants to test or expand their knowledge of Chemnitz in a fun way. The app is available free of charge and ad-free on all Android and iOS devices. If a person plays the game with VR goggles – made of cardboard, for example – they may feel a tickle in their stomach when they fall; similar to the sensation experienced when a person is sitting on a motionless train and feels as if they are moving when it is actually a train on an adjacent track. By tilting and turning their smartphone, users of the app can also play the game without a cardboard viewer.

From the „University Library in the Capital of Culture” to the “5D-Library”

University Library of Chemnitz University of Technology presents its strategy for development until the year 2030

In the year 2030, the University Library has turned into a „5D-Library”. This is the objective determined in the strategy of the University Library of Chemnitz University of Technology which she has published now in short version on a website (mytuc.org/xrfv). In this context, “5D” stands for: digital, dynamic, durable, divers and discursive. Within those thematic fields, the University Library has defined 24 measures in total which will be implemented by already established task teams step by step within the next five years.

“Naturally, we do not start at zero but we may rely on a lot of what we already achieved, for example regarding the engagement for Open Science, the promotion of Open Access, the digitization of our collections, the modularization of services and within sustainability” comments Angela Malz, Director of the University Library. And as so-called “Third Place”, the University Library offers, in addition to the place of work and the own home, a variable location of learning and knowledge inviting to relax, to learn, to stay and to participate in a variety of events and which, within the upcoming years, enhances its portfolio by i.a. a Virtual Reading Hall. Complementarily Malz adds: “Within the strategy, however, we start also a lot of other projects, for example in the field of enhanced engagement in internationalization, in dealing with new AR- and AI-technologies in the library sector as well as in our engagement for long-time-archiving.”

All started with the moving of the University Library to the Old Spinning Mill building in the year 2020. With respect to the concentration from three de-centralized to one central library location, the geographic location and the related task, the new functionalities of the building like an exhibition and an event area as well as to the merging to one team, it was decided to jointly also determine a direction for the short-, mid- and long-term development of the Library. In this context, i.a. workshops with all staff members of the University Library were organized who merged to working groups dealing with respective thematic key fields. At the beginning of 2023, a comprehensive survey among its users consisting of students and scholars of Chemnitz University of Technology, non-scientific staff members as well as external users was implemented. Non-users were included as well. The objective consisted on including the internal as well as the external point of view in the strategy development process. “In total, 630 online-surveys were filled in completely and integrated in the evaluation of results for deriving action measures”, Dr. Wolfgang Lambrecht, Deputy Director of the University Library, reported.

From this emerged a strategy document comprising of more than 40 pages which was presented in summary to the Library Board of Chemnitz University of Technology in December 2024 and was highly appreciated. The short version of the strategic approaches may now be read on the Library-website mentioned above. “I am very delighted that we completed the strategy development process as scheduled so that we may now, right in time of the year of the Capital of Culture, proceed on our way to a 5D-Library” Malz says. In the mid of the strategy period, a mid-term assessment of the way to the “5D-Library” is envisaged where again adherents of Chemnitz University of Technology and external Library users will be asked for their engagement.

By the way, the special collection does not only include titles of older collections of the University Library but also a great number of new books which could have been acquired thanks to funding of the TUCculture2025-program of Chemnitz University of Technology. “I am very delighted that we are able to present this special collection of books right at the time of the official opening of Chemnitz as European Capital of Culture and I would like to express my gratitude to Chemnitz University of Technology for the opportunity to enrich and enhance that special collection by a great number and variety of new books regarding each of the Capitals of Culture”, Angela Malz, Director of the University Library, comments. “I strongly wish that this special collection is not only used by adherents of the University but also by citizens of Chemnitz and beyond as it is a varied mixture of travel and city guides, illustrated and photo books, cultural guides and locally-related literature which normally should offer something adequate for any preferences”, she adds.

“All visitors of the University Library are welcome to browse through the titles presented on their heart’s content. In addition, they have the opportunity to test their geographical knowledge with regard to the Capitals of Culture by placing buttons on a map of Europe which is not really easy for every Capital of Culture”, Dr. Wolfgang Lambrecht, Deputy Director of the University Library and initiator of the project, says. In case of interest, registered users of the University Library may also borrow the books of the special collection at the desk at the 1st level and continue reading at home.

On the occasion of the “International Open Access Week 2024”, Chemnitz University Library invites for discussion at the end of October – for the first time, the “Open Access Award” will be accorded in different categories

Equal opportunities for everyone regarding the access to an open science: Institutions around the globe make use of the annual „International Open Access Week“ (OAW) to promote Open Access and additionally an open science culture (Open Science) as indispensable part of science and research by events and activities. In this context, the University Library (UL) of Chemnitz University of Technology invites for several events from October 21 to 27. Among them a workshop, a virtual fun riddle and a hands-on activity are being offered at the dining hall Reichenhainer Straße.

The theme of the OAW of 2023 “Community over Commercialization” is determined as focus point again this year due to its urgency. The reason why: Authors, funding organizations, research institutions and service providers like libraries world-wide are reconsidering their ways of transformation to Open Access selected. Which Open Access-business models are really serving at science? Thus, the Open Science Team of the UL would like to discuss its thesis that “All research results should be open to public. Change my mind!” at its booth at dining hall Reichenhainer Straße on October 23 between noon and 2 pm.

On October 24, the University Library invites to panel discussion at Weinhold-building from 12:30 pm on. The focus is put on the question “Is this the future or just rip-off? Open Access Publishing at Elsevier, Wiley and Springer vs. MDPI and Frontiers”. An input is given i.a. by Prof. Dr. Arved C. Hübler, Head of the Institute for Print and Media Technology. He says: “The publication market counts among the last pillars for good science, it serves for selection – in Open Access as well.” The panel is also joined by Prof. Dr. Robert Kretschmar, holder of the professorship of Inorganic Chemistry. He thinks; “The great challenge of the present peer- review-system is that profits of the publishers are financed by tax money and this in three ways: Scientists elaborate and format the articles, other scientists are reviewing them and last but not least one pays in the one or the other manner. Although, there are alternatives like Diamond Open Access.” To the panel participants counts also Prof. Dr. Olfa Kanoun, holder of the Professorship of Measuring and Sensor Technologies. She may report, jointly with her PhD-students, from nice and less nice experiences with entire Open Access Publishers as well as the traditional publishing system. Persons interested are asked for prior registration for the panel discussion.

The highlight of this year is the according of the “Open Access Award” in different categories. In acknowledgement of their efforts for enhancing Open Access at Chemnitz University of Technology, awards are accorded to some scientists resp. representatives of the different ways of publication: Open Access Gold, Open Access Green, Diamond Open Access and Open Access Monographs.

Background: Ways of Open Access-publishing

Politics and science are promoting the transformation from Closed Access to the free availability of knowledge. Funding organizations support projects for the establishment of appropriate sustainable infrastructures. Publishers offer different Open Access options. Academic institutions and consortia re-allocate publications costs from subscription to the financing of individual publications. Although authors as well as users do not have to pay for publishing of and access to scientific results, all Open Access ways are not possible without the investment of resources. During the last decades, no way of publication could be determined as royal road on the national as well as on the international level. Also the further enhancement of Diamond Open Access requires intensive reflection on sustainability or potential dependencies.

Let’s debate #TUCgether: The University Library of Chemnitz University of Technology engages in the initiative "Take Place for Democracy“ with a read & discuss corner

Which places of democracy do exist in Germany? Is God democratic? And which understanding(s) do we have of democracy by the way and of which value it is for our society? Those and many other questions are answered by a particular read & discuss corner of the University Library (UL) of Chemnitz University of Technology established in the east wing at the ground floor of the Library building. Interested persons may find several books in German and English dealing with the topic of democracy from different points of view. The books may be picked up on-site or being retrieved via a QR-code.

"The compilation of literature in our thematic-oriented book trolley should not only invite for going through the books but the reading corner is also supposed to be a place for democratic share of opinions," quotes University Library Director Angela Malz and adds: "Many books, which may by the way also being borrowed, should serve at starting a discussion – on-site or beyond our Library."

The University Library considers itself not only to be a place of knowledge but also a place for democracy. For this reason, the UL takes part with this particular offer in the initiative "Take Place for Democracy", which was started in May 2024 at Kassel University and is being supported increasingly throughout entire Germany – such as by Chemnitz University of Technology. The main objective of this initiative consists on finding appropriate places for starting a dialogue with each other and for enhancing a democratic debating culture. It is particularly intended to listen to each other, to respect each other, to tolerate opposite opinions in order to explore shared and differing ideas. This initiative complements the campaign STAND TOGETHER #TUCgether, by which the University engages for our liberal democratic constitution, for peacefully living together as well as for tolerance, diversity and cosmopolitanism.

TUC graduate Ingo Gebhardt is the head of the smallest, at the same time youngest and first international high school in the city of Chemnitz

On August 21, 2023, the International Stefan Heym Gymnasium in Chemnitz begins the new school year. Ingo Gebhardt, who has been in charge of the city's youngest high school not far from the Schloßteich since 2022, is pleased that even more life is now moving into the historic walls of the former paper and cardboard factory "Robert Winckler" on Seumestraße. "Last year, we had 17 students in our first fifth grade, but this year, the number will triple as 42 more boys and girls join," Gebhardt anticipates. The Stefan Heym Gymnasium is designed for a two-class operation with a total of about 400 students. "This means that up to 25 children can study in a class from grades 5 to 12," explains the school head, who will be facing even more work in the future: "Scheduling, teaching, and discussions with students and their parents – all of this needs to be managed. Communication and building mutual trust are the be-all and end-all of my work."

The 43-year-old, who studied education at Chemnitz University of Technology (TUC) from 1999 to 2005, found his way to the school's private educational service provider, F+U Sachsen, after professional stints in Saxony and at his alma mater. In addition to the Abitur, students can also earn a globally recognized international diploma (International Baccalaureate) at the school named after the world-famous Chemnitz author Stefan Heym. "It was and is very exciting to help shape the high school with many ideas and creative freedom," says Gebhardt. "I was able to draw on a lot of experience from my studies and my professional years at Chemnitz University of Technology," he adds. Now he can finally implement the theoretical principles that he learned at Prof. Dr. Volker Bank's Professorship of Business and Economic Education.

Improvisational skills were also in demand last year when the school started: "Since the construction work wasn't quite finished, we used the first week for a trip to the school camp in Chemnitz's Küchwald Park. Everyone liked it so much that we will repeat this at the beginning of every school year and are heading there again for a getting-to-know-each-other trip."

Currently, Gebhardt is planning lessons with 14 teachers, but hardly any of them have a full-time position. Many also work at other institutions of the same educational service provider. Besides being the school head, in everyday life, he is also a sports teacher and the class teacher of the first fifth-grade class. "Some of my former fifth graders will now become mentors for the students who are new to the high school. I am very much looking forward to this experience," says Gebhardt. Internationality and diversity are firmly anchored in the school concept. English will increasingly become the language of instruction in selected subjects. "Children should experience cultural diversity as the norm with us and thus be strengthened in their personal development," says Gebhardt. There are also plans for physical activities during school hours. Gebhardt also believes it's essential for students to critically engage with current events – for example, during project days – in line with the school's namesake.

In the future, Gebhardt wants to cooperate more closely with TUC. A few months ago, the high school was in contact with TUC's Creative Center as part of the interactive exhibition "Experience Mathematics & Technology". Further contact points arose through the project "RADerFAHREN" of the Professorship of Business Administration – Corporate Environmental Management and Sustainability (headed by Prof. Dr. Marlen Gabriele Arnold). This project primarily addresses education for sustainable development in the field of local urban mobility and focuses on mobility education and traffic education for children around ten years old, their legal guardians, and teachers at primary and secondary schools in Chemnitz. Gebhardt also plans to use the many services of TUC's "student portal", including the student workshop of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, the student laboratory "Wonderland Physics", and the services of the University Library. "The advantage is that I am well connected with many areas of the university," says the school head.

On the "Chemnitz Christopher Street Day 2023", Chemnitz University of Technology raises the rainbow flag on all its flagpoles, once again making a statement for tolerance, diversity, and openness to the world

On the occasion of Christopher Street Day (CSD) in Chemnitz on July 29, 2023, the rainbow flag will be hoisted on all eleven flagpoles at Chemnitz University of Technology (TUC). TUC is thereby continuing its campaign #wirsindchemnitz, which was awarded the "Prize for University Communication" in 2019. In doing so, it shows its colors and once again sends a clear message against discrimination and for tolerance, diversity, and cosmopolitanism. This is also symbolized by the commitment of the Senate, University Management, and University Council of TUC to tolerance, diversity, and cosmopolitanism.

TUC has made numerous efforts in recent years to embody diversity. This is evidenced, for example, by the signing of the "Charter of Diversity" in April 2023, the holding of the first Diversity Day on May 23, 2023, and participation in the audit for the "Shaping Diversity" certificate from the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft e.V.

Keyword: Commitment of the Senate, University Management, and University Council of TUC to Tolerance, Diversity, and Cosmopolitanism

TUC is emphatically against discrimination and for tolerance, diversity, and cosmopolitanism. It strives to consistently embody these principles internally and carry them confidently to the outside world. This is also evidenced by the commitment of the Senate, University Management, and University Council of TUC to tolerance, diversity, and cosmopolitanism:

"Chemnitz University of Technology as an educational and research institution offers people from all over the world a home and welcomes them warmly, regardless of where they come from, what religion they belong to, what sexual orientation they have, or what form of coexistence they choose.

From this conviction, we wish not only on the university campus but also beyond it, a climate that is open to the world and characterized by acceptance. Therefore, we oppose statements and actions that contradict this concern, especially racist, extreme right-wing, or even openly radical right-wing positions. We emphatically call on all people in positions of responsibility in politics, business, society, and culture to continue to fight for an open and discrimination-free society and to stand up for the basic values of a free, democratic, and open society!"

Chemnitzer Förderverein für Physik e. V. honored outstanding study results of the two Chemnitz students Moritz Lobinski and Peter Henning

The Chemnitzer Förderverein für Physik e. V. (CFP), which has been committed to supporting students interested in physics and young scientists in physics and related disciplines for more than 20 years, awarded its sponsorship prize a few days ago to Moritz Lobinski and Peter Henning from Chemnitz University of Technology (TUC), who successfully completed their bachelor studies in Sensory Science and Cognitive Psychology and Physics, respectively. "Both award winners have shown excellent academic performance in their bachelor studies over the past years," said Prof. Dr. Dietrich R. T. Zahn, chairman of the Chemnitz Förderverein für Physik e. V., explaining the award. The two students remain loyal to TUC even after the very good completion of their bachelor's degree and are currently studying in the master's programs in Physics and Sensory Science and Cognitive Psychology.

Peter Henning has written a bachelor thesis on "Sputter deposition of single crystalline thin films of the high entropy alloy CoCrFeNi" as part of his bachelor course in physics. The research field of high entropy alloys (HEA) is attracting increasing attention due to promising properties for applications and the prospect of fundamental discoveries. HEA consist of at least four different elements, the molar content of which in the alloy is in the range between 5 and 35 percent, with the atomic lattice sites in the crystal being randomly occupied. The resulting variety of compositions and microstructures is of particular interest in a wide range of fields: increased hardness and corrosion resistance are ideal for technical applications, while HEA also serve as catalysts, in the electrolysis of hydrogen. Even though there are already isolated studies on the surface physics of HEA, the electronic and structural properties of HEA surfaces are still very poorly understood because the crystalline HEA required for surface physics studies has not been easy to realize so far. Therefore, the aim of the bachelor thesis was to close this gap and to produce high entropy alloys in single crystalline form. As part of his work, Henning developed a "recipe" to deposit single crystalline CoCrFeNi films on MgO and Al2O3 substrates. Of fundamental interest is the question of whether an electronic band structure forms in these materials despite the randomly occupied lattice, which could be clarified in the work by means of photoemission measurements.

Moritz Lobinski wrote a bachelor thesis on the topic "Measuring the association of pitch and brightness using binocular rivalry and eye tracking" in the bachelor program Sensory and Cognitive Psychology. Using binocular rivalry and eye tracking, the goal was to validate previous findings that higher tones are associated with brighter hues and lower tones are associated with darker hues. The results found by Lobinski provide no evidence that the tone frequency of a stimulus has an effect on the perception of areas of different brightness. The perceptual durations of two incongruent stimuli did not differ systematically as a function of a simultaneously presented auditory stimulus. In contrast, subjects assigned higher tones to lighter gray tones and lower tones to darker gray tones in the explicit query.
