Abstract: The life and work of the Russian mathematician S. M. Nikol'skij is described and recognized. Nikol'skij, born in 1905 in Russia is an outstanding specialist in functional analysis, approximation theory, embedding of functional spaces, theory of quadrature formulas as well as variational methods for solving partial differential equations. He influenced the mathematical development in Soviet Union and Russia to a high degree. Under his supervision a great number of leading Russian and other mathematicians graduated. His great merits were recognized by numerous awards. Until now, Nikol'skij works as a mathematician and pedagogue with special focus on didactics.
