Distinction between direct and indirect quotation

In the case of a direct quotation, the exact wording is taken from the original work. Each editing must be marked.

Example: „[This] is a literal quotation with editing[s] and [...] omissions.“

With the indirect quotation, a thought from the original work is reproduced in its own words. In doing so, you should make it clear exactly where the ideas are from others.

Example: As the author so aptly wrote, this is an indirect quotation and here follow my additions and ideas.

Don't forget: Make sure that you inquire in your department which citation style is used. If there are no guidelines, decide on a citation style and apply it consistently.
