Secure network access via VPN

VPN stands for virtual private network and enables secure network operations over insecure networks, such as the Wi-Fi network at the TU, or external Internet providers. To protect your online communication from unauthorized interception or forgery you should use VPN, which uses special protocols to encrypt your data transmission.

At Chemnitz University the IPsec standard (IP security) and alternatively the Secure Socket Layer (SSL) protocol is used. In principle, your computer, which at any point on the Internet, builds up a virtual secure "tunnel" to the VPN server at the university. In this tunnel all your data will be transmitted encrypted.

Who is this service for?

Users accessing the Campus computer network
  • from home computers connected via external Internet providers by modem, ISDN, or DSL

  • "on the road", such as on business trips, from Internet cafes, or at other universities

  • from data ports in public areas of the Chemnitz university, such as lecture rooms

To establish a secure VPN connection you have you authenticate yourself with your URZ login and your password. If authenticated correctly your computer gets an IP address of the Campus network. So you're able to access network services requiring a local address, even if you are on a remote place.

Requirements

  • a valid URZ account
  • a computer with a working network connection

On your computer you have to install a so-called VPN client. Alternatively, is the IPsec-based Cisco VPN Client and Cisco's SSL-based AnyConnect client available. There are campus licenses available which are cost-free for all students and employees of the University. We have only a restricted amount of licenses of AnyConnect client. Therefore please use an IPsec-based client if possible.

On Linux is also available the free IPsec-based VPN client VPNC or the free SSL-based VPN client Openconnect.

The following platforms are supported:
