At the Department of English, we teach linguistics, literary studies, area studies, TESOL and practical language skills. Our B.A. English Studies and M.A. English Studies are both accredited study programmes.

We place a strong emphasis on intercultural competence and communication, practical skills, interdisciplinarity, cutting-edge research, digital methods and individual student support. JEFF PHILLIPS
On Thursday, May 16, 2024, our esteemed colleague and teacher Jeff Phillips passed away. This tragic event happened very quickly and completely unexpectedly for all of us. We are deeply shocked and very sad to have lost one of our kindest and most long-standing members of the Department for English and American Studies. We will never forget Jeff Phillip’s friendliness, good humour and enthusiasm, and how much he cared about teaching his students. We will miss his booming voice and his boisterous laugh.

Jeff Phillips came to Chemnitz with teaching experience as a “Lektor” from Hannover and Kassel. For over 20 years, he taught generations of students at the English Department.With his high teaching load, he contributed to the success of our students more than anyone else in the Department.His students will remember him as a traditional strict and open teacher, who was always keen to maintain international standards, an institution within the institution.His colleagues will remember him as the Liberal Arts man from the (US-American) South.During his long experience at German universities, he remained a dedicated observer of political and cultural changes in the US – and always interesting to talk to.The big bass baritone was devoted to the opera in all its forms, and he proved to be an expert and keen follower of developments in music and the arts.We appreciated his contributions to staff meetings or “Heizhaus” conferences - he always enjoyed talking informally to students as well as international guest professors. We will miss the stimulating discussions with him about his American heritage and family background in Georgia.We are so sad that we will never hear from him how he managed to reintegrate into his old home after his retirement.

Practical language training
A wide range of practical language courses help students enhance their English language proficiency (e.g. in pronunciation, grammar, reading, writing, speaking and translation) and support them in the development of core academic skills, such as essay writing and presentation skills.

We have ties to many attractive partner universities abroad, not only in Europe (like many other universities) but even in South(east) Asia.
Interesting focus areas
Our staff members are experts in their specialised research fields, and we can therefore offer you interesting focus areas for your studies and your own research projects:
- As an English Department at a technical university, we have a focus on digital technologies and methods and you can even study Digital English Linguistics, where you will learn about software development, chatbots etc.
- Home to the creative writing journal Turning Pages, our English Literatures section prioritises creativity and intellectual rigour, offering courses on a wide range of global Anglophone literatures from South Asia to Canada to New Zealand.
- Our English Department features one of the few Anglophone Area Studies sections in Germany with a focus on social science and politics.
- Our TESOL section is very popular with students because it goes beyond traditional teacher education and enables them to teach in a variety of educational settings.
