4. Cultural Activities

Chemnitz' particular strengths are its cabaret scene and the opera company. However, the other cultural traditions are well-represented in theater, galleries, and museums. Two unique museums of particular interest to students of science are the Industrie Museum and the Spiele Museum (games and toys museum). Information on these and on special events is available at the city's theater service: (0371) 488-4665.

There are pubs, restaurants, and cafes of various cuisines and styles distributed throughout Chemnitz. Several movie theaters show foreign and art movies (e.g., Voxxx, ClubKino Siegmar) and the current box office scene is also quite well represented (Film Palast Luxor). There is a women's center (Lila Villa) and many youth clubs (haus "spektrum", Kraftwerk, B-Plan, Arthur) are only a few. The city's environmental center (Umweltzentrum) is home to several national environmental organizations, a "Third World" shop, and a vegetarian cafe/restaurant.

5. Churches

On campus, several rooms have been reserved for weekly religious meetings of students of the Protestant and Catholic community. More information is posted on the board in the dining hall (Mensa) on Reichenhainer Str. 55.

G. Linguistic Requirements

It is recommended that ECTS students have sufficient German language skills before they begin their studies in Chemnitz. When registering at the International Students' Office (Akademisches Auslandsamt), students are asked to provide proof of their German language proficiency. One of the following certificates is sufficient:

To prepare for the DSH examination, students can take an intensive 90-day language course that starts before the beginning of each semester, in April and October. ECTS students who wish to further their language skills can enroll in a two-week intensive course at the end of September or at the end of March.

The university also offers language classes throughout the semester. For details on tuition and scheduling please contact:

H. Insurance

1. Health Insurance

All residents of Germany must have health insurance. The International Students' Office (Akademisches Auslandsamt) will request proof of such, for example, the E111 or E107 form.
If a student does not have one of these documents, he or she is required to purchase health insurance locally (addresses can be obtained from the Studentenwerk).

2. Liability Insurance

At the TU Chemnitz, there is no requirement for individuals to carry third-party liability insurance. Nevertheless, students are advised to subscribe to such an insurance policy in their home country.

J. History

The city of Chemnitz grew at the ford where several mercantile shipping routes crossed the Chemnitz river. Early in its history it received the status of a free town of the Empire and in 1136-1137 the Emperor Lothar III founded a Benedictine monastery here. However, the year 1165 is considered the actual date of the founding of the town.
After it obtained the right to the bleaching monopoly in 1357, Chemnitz became a center of weaving and also of linen production. During the same period, the growth of iron ore mining played a great role in its economic rise. In the 15th century, a small factory for copper extraction and smithing, as well as a liquation shop (separation of different metals) was set up. Cotton was introduced to the textile industry during the 16th century and, by the end of that century, Chemnitz had become the most important center of textile manufacturing in Saxony, contributing a significant share of the country's export goods. Around 1728, the hosiery trade began to develop and, little by little, evolved into the main local industry. It is still a major component of the current local economy.

At the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th, textile manufacturing became more mechanized, requiring weaving and knitting machinery. This led to Chemnitz becoming a leader in the production of machine-tools and machinery in Germany.
In this industrial setting, on May 2, 1836 a "Royal Industrial School" (Königliche Gewerbschule) was founded. There were 14 students and 3 main curricula: mechanical technology, chemical technology, and agriculture. Later it became the "Advanced Industrial School" (Höhere Gewerbschule). At this time, there were about 11,000 inhabitants in Chemnitz.

In 1882 (with 103,000 inhabitants), power electrical engineering was added to the curricula, and in 1892 the Department of Electrical Engineering was established. At the end of this century of industrial revolution, the number of students exceeded 1000 for the first time. The status of "Royal Technical Academy" (Königliche Gewerbeakademie) was awarded to the school in 1900.
The academy was temporarily closed because of damage during World War II. It was reopened, as the "Technical High School of Chemnitz" (Technische Lehranstalten Chemnitz) and had about 500 students. In 1953, when Chemnitz was renamed Karl-Marx-Stadt, the school was again renamed "College of Mechanical Engineering Karl-Marx-Stadt " (Hochschule für Maschinenbau Karl-Marx-Stadt). Ten years later, more than 1500 students were enrolled in the Departments of Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Mechanical Engineering, and Electrical Engineering. The College grew to about 8000 in 1986, when it was recognized as a "Technical University".
After the German reunification on October 3rd, 1990, Karl-Marx-Stadt again became Chemnitz. In 1992, the College of Zwickau joined the Technical University Chemnitz in a new institute - the Technical University Chemnitz-Zwickau. New departments, such as Economics and Humanities, were added to the traditional departments of Sciences and Technology. In 1997, however, Zwickau's contribution was fully integrated into the Chemnitz University of Technology.
Currently about 280,000 inhabitants live in Chemnitz and 5,000 students are registered at the university, among them 200 foreigners from more than 30 countries.

The university consists of 7 departments:

Die Fakultät ist für die Durchführung des Studiums auf der Grundlage der Studien-, Prüfungs- und Praktikantenordnungen in den durch sie vertretenen Studienrichtungen verantwortlich. Forschung und Lehre werden durch Institute verwirklicht, die den Fakultäten zugeordnet sind.
