Chemnitz University of Technology Signs Charter of Diversity

Chemnitz University of Technology focuses on a scientific and working culture that enables equal opportunities for all members and affiliates of the university and supports them in developing their individual talents and potentials

Chemnitz University of Technology is committed to diversity – even in the working world. That is why Prof. Dr. Gerd Strohmeier, President of Chemnitz University of Technology, has signed the Charter of Diversity. By doing so, Chemnitz University of Technology, as one of the largest employers in the city, joins a nationwide diversity network of institutions and companies where lively exchange takes place on lived diversity in all dimensions of diversity management. The goal of Chemnitz University of Technology is to find both partners for support and ideas and expertise for implementing their diversity strategy within the network. Furthermore, Chemnitz University of Technology presents itself as a cosmopolitan, diverse, and tolerant university.

At the core of the Charter of Diversity is the commitment to create a working environment that is free of prejudice and characterized by mutual respect. Chemnitz University of Technology thus focuses on a scientific and working culture that enables equal opportunities for all members and affiliates of the university and supports them in developing their individual talents and potentials – regardless of age, ethnic origin and nationality, gender and gender identity, physical and mental abilities, religion and worldview, sexual orientation, and social background.

"Chemnitz University of Technology is a community of values in which diversity is a fundamental building block that enjoys central importance in all areas of our university life. This is also evidenced by the commitment of the Academic Senate, University Management, and University Council of Chemnitz University of Technology to tolerance, diversity, and cosmopolitanism. Considering this, it was only logical to sign the Charter of Diversity," says President Prof. Dr. Gerd Strohmeier.

Currently, Chemnitz University of Technology is also in the process of auditing for the Shaping Diversity certificate from the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft e.V. Alongside the Family-Friendly University certificate, another milestone for a diversity-conscious Chemnitz University of Technology is to be set. The university also plans to present itself as a cosmopolitan, diverse, and tolerant university at the next nationwide Diversity Day on May 23, 2023.

Chemnitz University of Technology stands firmly against discrimination and for tolerance, diversity, and cosmopolitanism. It strives to consistently live these principles internally and confidently represent them externally. This is also demonstrated by the commitment of the Academic Senate, University Management, and University Council of Chemnitz University of Technology to tolerance, diversity, and cosmopolitanism:

"Chemnitz University of Technology, as an educational and research institution, offers people from all over the world a home and warmly welcomes them, regardless of where they come from, which religion they belong to, what sexual orientation they have, or what form of coexistence they choose.

Based on this conviction, we not only wish for a cosmopolitan and acceptance-oriented climate on the university campus but also beyond. Therefore, we firmly oppose statements and actions that contradict this concern, particularly racist, right-wing extremist, or even openly radical right-wing positions. We emphatically call on all those responsible in politics, business, society, and culture to continue to fight for an open and discrimination-free society and to stand up for the fundamental values of a free, democratic, and open society!"
