Keynote Speakers

Prof. Dr. Nikita Dhawan (University of Innsbruck)

abstract:

“The Dilemma of Representation: Voice, Agency and Gender”

At the heart of functioning of democracy and justice is the question of representation, namely, who is heard and who is silenced, who speaks on behalf of whom. In order to overcome marginalization of vulnerable individuals and groups and to facilitate their participation in economic, political and social structures and processes, the “normative violence” exerted by exclusionary discourses must be undone through the recovery of silenced perspectives. However, when speaking itself is anchored in structures and histories of domination, then any attempts to reinstate “silenced voices” risks betraying and neutralizing the untranslatability of their experience. Representation as an act of reading of silences is thereby fraught with dangers of producing anew regimes of exclusions and forms of violence. Counter-discourses themselves risk silencing those in whose name they claim to speak. The talk will address the (im)possible politics of representation from a postcolonial-queer-feminist perspective with particular focus on the South Asian context.
