Thesis Title: Realization of a Virtual Towbar Based on Car-to-Car Technologies for Partial or Full Electrification of Utility Vehicles

Description: In this project, we plan to develop the technical basis for a self powered trailer that allows for a modular construction of a partial - in case of a conventional towing car or fully electric - in case of a utility vehicle. Through Car-to-Car communication, a virtual towbar is developed connecting a self-driven trailer to its leading car. The self-driven trailer follows the leading car with a suitable safe distance and differs from the completely autonomous vehicles which are capable of planning and driving on their own routes. The safe distance between the self-driven trailer and the leading car needs to be short such that no other car can come in between them. This is accomplished through real-time communication which can, for example, even detect an emergency braking on time. Along this project, we intend to prove that the virtual towbar is as safe as its mechanical counterpart. This way, we expect no profound adjustment of traffic laws and regulations to be required as in the case of autonomous vehicles.
