Profile and Research Area

In 1994, I earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Paderborn, and in 1999, I received my Ph.D. from the Department of Computer Science at the Technical University of Ilmenau. I worked at the Johannes W. Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main and the California Institute of Technology (Pasadena, USA). In 2003, I founded a research group in the Department of Psychology at the University of Münster. Since 2009, I have held the Chair of Artificial Intelligence at Chemnitz University of Technology, and since 2010, I have been affiliated with the Bernstein Center for Computational Neuroscience Berlin. I pursue an experimental and model-driven approach to investigating how the brain works, with the goal of developing novel, intelligent cognitive systems. In this way, I develop models that help interpret psychological and neuroscientific data, thereby making a direct contribution to our understanding of the brain. I also work on transferring neuroscientific findings into technical applications. The accumulation of knowledge in brain research simultaneously leads to the development of better intelligent systems that operate on biological principles. I am a member of MeTech because it gives me the opportunity to work in an interdisciplinary setting and to participate in large-scale research projects.
