This summer school intends to bridge pure math, modeling, numerics, and applications related to different aspects of surfaces, addressing both PhD students and postdocs (interested in) working in related fields. The school consists of four keynote lectures by Charlie Elliott, Irene Fonseca, André Neves, and Andreas Roschger.
The summer school will take place at the seminar facilities of the Frauenwörth Abbey on Frauenchiemsee island, located on Lake Chiemsee in Bavaria. All participants are supposed to arrive on Sunday, August 28 at the afternoon, so we can get to know everyone at dinner. Departure on Friday, September 2 after lunch will leave enough time for catching an airplane in Munich.
There will be four (plenary) keynote lectures consisting of four one-hour talks each.
Charlie Elliott | PDEs in Complex and Evolving Domains |
---|---|
Irene Fonseca | Gamma-Convergence and Applications to Phase Transitions [ abstract ] |
André Neves | Minimal Surfaces in Spheres and Negatively Curved Manifolds |
Andreas Roschger | Curved Surfaces in Biological Systems |
Every keynote is accompanied by a total of about ten hours of (sectional) small group tutorials/problem groups. Participants will choose their preferred tutorial. The results of the tutorials will be presented on Friday before lunch in the Presentations session.
In order to get to know each other, we provide to every young participant the opportunity to present their current research in a three minutes lightning talk at one of the first evenings.
On the free Wednesday afternoon, we organize an excursion to the nearby Herrenchiemsee island, including a guided tour to the palace. In particular we highlight the history of the Constitutional Convention which took place in August 1948 at the Herrenchiemsee Abbey.
Applicants are kindly asked to register by following the link below. The number of participants in the summer school is limited to a maximum of ca. 50 individuals. The decision on the applications will be communicated around mid-May.
Due to funding by the Joachim Herz Foundation, successful participants are provided with accommodation (single room with shared shower) in the monastery for five nights (Sunday-Friday). Also lunch and the social events organized during the summer school as well as snacks during the coffee breaks will be covered. All participants are required to attend for the whole duration of the summer school.
The conference fee for the summer school amounts to 110 Euro. Once selected, the participants can pay the fee by credit card. In exceptional cases this fee might be waived, in that case please contact the organizers.
For participants traveling with small children, we offer limited funding for accompanying persons.
Practical information and travel instructions may be found below.
The seminar house is an integral part of the Abbey of Frauenwörth and thus belongs to the habitat of a Benedictine community. It is expected that the seminar participants and guests of this monastic environment adapt and behave considerately.
The rules expect that after 9.30pm noone may be bothered by noise. Smoking is prohibited throughout the seminar area, including the monastery courtyard. Please note that swimwear may only be worn on the lakeshore, but not in the house or in the Klosterhof. In addition, sleeveless or crop tops, too tight shorts or too short skirts are not desirable.
Wifi is available at the seminar area, but can be slow at times. Please do not rely on the availability of high-speed internet.
Make sure to bring everything you need as trips off the island might not be possible without missing a substantial part of the summer school. However, there is a tiny supermarket on the island where you can find a limited offer of products of basic needs.
Meals will be served by the Klosterwirt [de] restaurant. Upon approval, we kindly ask participants to let us know of any specific dietary requirements.
Information can be found on the official website of the German Federal Foreign Office.
