Writing a successful research proposal requires strong research skills, content knowledge, writing proficiency, and organizational ability. The workshop Grant Writing provides doctoral candidates with the background, skills, and key steps necessary to develop a competitive funding proposal. Developing a strong research idea and considering funding resources is as important as understanding the elements of a proposal package. By writing and reviewing typical grant components, students learn how to outline a grant proposal start to finish.

Objectives

  • Know how to develop, organize, and outline a research grant proposal
  • Understand the essential components of a grant proposal package
  • Be able to write a compelling abstract

The workshop combines presentation (including video clips), discussion (partner, small group, round table), and practical hands-on exercises. Copies of research proposal checklist, writing guideline, list of useful phrases, and various sample abstracts will be provided.

Participants should think about a possible topic for a research application (now or in the future) and should bring their current or past proposal (if they have such) as well as their laptop computer with any operating system for writing exercises.

The workshop will be held in English.

In this seminar, participants will review qualitative research methods (e.g. interviews, participant observation) taking challenges related to data collection in an international field into account.

Conducting research in an international context may be very challenging. And it is not only a question of language. Cultural issues play an important role and they may sometimes not be taken into consideration. This workshop aims to enhance the participants’ awareness on how cultural issues can affect their research and enable them to adjust methods accordingly.

During the workshop, participants analyze cultural challenges at different stages of their research, including research preparation, language and translation, researcher identity, relationship building or choosing interview sites. Additionally, ethical issues will be addressed.

Several texts as well as examples from the field will be used during the workshop. Participants are welcome to bring own examples, questions or challenges they are facing and that could be analyzed.

This Workshop is offered within the project InProTUC and is promoted by the German Academic Exchange Service and funded by the Federal Ministry for Education and Research.

Themen:

  • Textsorten und Publikationsformen
  • Publikationsanalyse, strategische Themen
  • Wahl des Publikationsorgans, der Publikationspartner
  • Zeit- und Arbeitsplanung
  • Verlagskontakt und Publikationsprozesse
  • Finanzierungsmöglichkeiten
  • Networking und Publikationen
  • Anbindung an die Scientific Community
  • Synergieeffekte nutzen

Methoden: Die Seminarmethodik wechselt zwischen Input, Einzel-, Paar- und Gruppenübungen und interaktiven Phasen.

Pursuing your PhD is a complex and long lasting project, which is much easier to master with sufficient planning. Therefore, the workshop imparts working and planning techniques to cope with restrictions of time and finance, risks, and different expectations. These techniques are borrowed from general project management and are adapted to the PhD phase. That is why on one hand the course will provide basic insights into project management as it is applied in various kinds of organizations, including industry. On the other hand, it contains many links to characteristics of the scientific system as well as real life examples from PhD situations. Another major topic is the reflection of the leadership experienced at work and ways to build a successful relationship with your supervisor. Note that this course is not about universal golden planning rules. Instead, every participant will get the chance to find their individual approach to the topic; how much and what kind of planning is sufficient can only be answered by yourself. According to that, it will be part of the course to work on the plans for your PhD, based on your personal goals and framework.

The workshop will be held in English.

As a major aspect of academic publishing, posters are an integral part of almost every scientific conference. Their purpose is to highlight and visualize research results as effectively as possible and invite discussion.

In this workshop, participants learn how to conceive and develop a clearly structured poster in order to attract the attention of their target audience. They will also learn the importance of moving away from densely-packed, high word count formats still so common today.

Specially tailored to the requirements of scientific presentations, the workshop conveys
a basic knowledge of design and layout techniques, e.g. targeted text formatting, optimizing images and graphs, handling proportions and the use of professional layout grids.

Participants will acquire essential skills how to present their research work visually well organized, attractive, eye-catching and focused on the most relevant items, and will have the opportunity to put directly into practice what they have learned.

To profit the most from this workshop, participants are required to bring individual material (text, images, graphs etc.) of their current research work or recently designed posters as well as their laptops and PowerPoint.

This Workshop is offered within the project InProTUC and is promoted by the German Academic Exchange Service and funded by the Federal Ministry for Education and Research.

Scientists have to give arguments in many different contexts: in their publications, in grant applications, in lab meetings and in conference presentations. Nevertheless, the bases for strong and correct arguments are not always fully clear to them. Logic provides extremely helpful tools for scientists to develop their arguments in a coherent, well-structured and convincing way. The seminar gives an introduction to the most important concepts of logic: premises and conclusions of arguments, validity and soundness of arguments, deductive vs. inductive reasoning, common types of inferences and fallacies. The idea of the seminar is to use these concepts as a toolbox which provides very useful techniques for everyday scientific work. The participants learn how to reconstruct arguments from scientific texts, how to give well-structured and logically valid arguments, and how to avoid misunderstandings. There are two main sets of exercises: one for written argumentation and one for oral argumentation.

Contents

  • basic concepts of logic (validity and soundness or arguments etc.)
  • inductive and deductive arguments
  • common types of fallacies
  • reconstructing arguments from texts
  • tips and exercises for written argumentation
  • tips and exercises for oral argumentation

Objectives

The participants...

  • state their arguments in a precise and logically coherent way
  • learn to quickly identify the strengths and weaknesses of arguments
  • learn how to break-down arguments into their logical structure
  • train analytical thinking

The workshop will be held in English.

Date: 16.-17.07.2018 | 09.00 - 17.00 Uhr

This workshop is aimed in particular at natural scientists (Faculties for the Natural Sciences, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Information Technology and Computer Science). The lecturer will assist participants in developing individual strategies for writing and publishing research papers and provide a useful “writing toolbox” for future reference.

Course description:
The reforms which have been implemented since the Bologna Process have led to a number of significant changes: an increasing number of courses at universities are being held in English, and postgraduate and doctorate students are frequently choosing to write their theses or dissertations in English to reach a wider audience. In this seminar, participants will become familiar with various aspects of clarity which are essential for producing logical, reader-friendly prose. As well as examining the various stages in the writing process, we will focus on the structure of abstracts, using examples of “best practice” articles, and closely look at how a professional research paper should be written. In doing so, participants will enrich their academic lexical repertoire and be able to identify common errors which frequently arise in academic texts.

Participants are advised to take along excerpts of personally written articles for discussion and analysis. An abstract of approx. 200 words (if available) or an excerpt from an article can be sent to the course coordinator one week before the start of the seminar. It will be corrected and returned during the seminar.

Topics:
- Planning and organising a research paper
- Writing effective introductions and conclusions
- Developing ideas and coherent arguments
- Paragraph structure
- Punctuation academic vocabulary and register
- Summarising and paraphrasing (the abstract)
