Chair of Personnel Management and Leadership Studies



The Chair in Personnel Management and Leadership Studies belongs to the Faculty of Economics - Business Administration - and is active in Teaching, Research and University Self-Administration.


In teaching, we strive to develop skills that enable graduates to deal with complex issues of Human Resource Management in academia and practice. We introduce and teach the newest research findings in the area of Human Resource Management in such a way that participants are able to translate this new knowledge into their own organizational and management practices. Important teaching principles include experience- and action-based learning combined with scientific evidence and ethical principles of responsibility and sustainability. These mission statements are reflected in our Bachelor, Master and PhD programs.
On Bachelor level, the chair conveys basic principles in General Management and Personnel Management concepts as well as the principles of leadership and methodology/tools and practices in Human Resource Management.
On Master level, we share responsibility for the Master in Management and Organization Studies (MOS-Master) together with the Chairs of Organization (BWL V) and Technology Management (BWL IX). The Master's program of Management & Organization Studies is built on a strategic management perspective and aims at developing knowledge in leadership, human resources management, organizational studies, organizational change as well as knowledge management and innovation strategies. The contents are research and practice oriented and the development of interpersonal and methodological skills is emphasized. Project-oriented and action-based learning approaches are offered (e.g. simulations, case studies, consulting and research projects) in the first term by means of a business game, and are furthermore encouraged by advanced training in the context of a consultation or a research project. Moreover, students have the possibility to develop international competences at a partner university during a term abroad or by participating in the summer school on Intercultural Management.
With regard to PhD students, we support doctoral candidates as they conduct their own research projects, usually within the research topics, in the chair. Candidates publish their research findings in journals, present their results at conferences and develop required qualifications for their academic careers.
On the Executive Master Level, we teach the newest research findings in the area of Human Resource Management in such a way that participants are able to translate this new knowledge into their own organizational and management practices. The Chair developed and implemented the first German Executive Master Program in Knowledge Management (EMKM) and has taught various Executive modules in High Performance - and Knowledge Management, e.g., at the Gutenberg University of Mainz and at the University of St. Gallen.


Research at the Chair in Personnel Management and Leadership Studies is conducted at the Institute for Organizational Competence and Strategy (FOKUS). FOKUS is primarily concerned with developments towards a knowledge economy and its implications for organizational and employee learning. Organizational and individual strategies for dealing with problems of dynamic and turbulent environments are investigated from a knowledge- and competence-based perspective in organizational and social science. The investigations of FOKUS are based on a variety of qualitative and quantitative methods of the empirical social sciences. Large representative studies as well as qualitative cases analysis have been conducted on Organizational Learning, Knowledge- and HR-Management and on corporate training strategies. In these research fields, we primarily focus on the following areas: questions of Personnel Management and Development are of interest, such as Human Resource Management strategies, systemic concepts of Knowledge Management and tools of Organizational Learning. Since 2000, High Performance Working Systems and High Performance Teams have been analyzed. This line of research has recently been focusing on High Reliability Organizations, Emergency and Disaster Management Systems and their learning capabilities from assignments and simulations. Respective research questions are regarded from an interdisciplinary - social, behavioral and economical science - perspective.

University self-administration

Regarding the university self-administration the members of the institute are involved in different areas, such as conducting alumni survey, regular course evaluations and participating in the examination and study commissions of the faculty.
