Doctoral Researcher in Computer Science (m, f, d)
(Salary grade E 13 TV-L, 50%)

Chemnitz University of Technology invites applications for a doctoral position in the Collaborative Research Centre (CRC 1410) Hybrid Societies – Humans Interacting with Embodied Technologies. Employment is offered until December 31st, 2023 starting March 1st, 2020.

Research Environment and Tasks: Research in the CRC 1410 Hybrid Societies pertains to the interaction with Embodied Digital Technologies (EDTs) as artificial bodies moving in real or virtual environments ( Interdisciplinary research in the CRC is guided by two leading questions to ultimately ensure smooth and efficient encounters between humans and embodied technologies in hybrid societies: What is required so that humans can coordinate with EDTs as smoothly as with conspecifics? How to design EDTs to meet these requirements? Cooperating researchers from psychology, engineering, computer science, human movement science, linguistics and gesture studies, sociology, law studies, physics, and mathematics scientifically inquire the interaction of humans with EDTs from the level of single actions up to the attribution of intentionality.

Project “TechnoSapiens: Perceptions and Stereotyping of Bionic Body Restauration and Augmentation” will investigate interactions between humans who are augmented with electromechanical body parts such as bionic prostheses, implants, and exoskeletons. As the availability of embodied digital technologies (EDTs) is limited, large-scale experiments regarding the perception of bionic EDTs can only be conducted using VR technologies. Therefore, a novel VR/AR system will be developed that allows a visual augmentation of arbitrary humans in real time and thus enables us to place individuals in virtual and life-like interactions with bionic EDTs for controlled experiments.

The successful applicant will be responsible for developing the VR/AR/DR visualization system. This involves rendering of the observed body part using an animated virtual model and replacing the body part in the video stream with the synthetic image. Furthermore, blending of the synthetic EDT into the original image has to happen without visually disturbing artifacts. Hence, estimating and reproducing the lighting situation of the scene will be of significant importance. The developed system has to operate in real-time, which means that the involved methods have to be computationally efficient. The front-end visualization has to be developed in close cooperation with the project partners to suit their requirements for the planned studies.

Researchers in the CRC Hybrid Societies contribute to the CRC’s joint research activities and actively participate, for instance, in research colloquia, lecture series, and workshops. The doctoral position includes the enrollment in the CRC's doctoral program.


  • University degree (Master/Diploma or equivalent) in Computer Science or a similar background
  • Expertise in object-oriented programming (C++/C#/Java or comparable)
  • Expertise in object-oriented software design
  • Expertise in one or more 3D-rendering APIs (e.g. OpenGL/DirectX/Vulcan)
  • Fluent in English (both written and spoken)
  • Expertise in the following areas is a plus:
    • VR/AR/DR application development
    • Image editing/analysis
  • The candidate shall have a strong interest to work in an interdisciplinary team
