Diabetes, also Known as the “Sugar Disease”: Recent Findings on Prevention and Treatment

Professor Isabel Sacco, from the University Sao Paulo in Brazil, will give a guest lecture on Thursday, December 8, 2016

Lack of exercise and an unbalanced diet increasingly lead to numerous medical conditions. These conditions present considerable problems to society today, not only in industrialized countries. Diabetes, also known as the “sugar disease”, is without a doubt one of the most common diseases. It can cause serious health problems, such as reduced balance control or loss of sensitivity in the extremities. Those affected experience numbness, paresthesia (i.e. tingling or burning), or even pain, particularly in their feet. This is because diabetes causes permanent nerve damage, also known as diabetic neuropathy, and is why this topic is a main focus of scientific research.

Professor Isabel Sacco, from the University Sao Paulo in Brazil, is a world-renowned expert in the area of diabetic diseases. She carries out extensive research in the area of the biomechanics and rehabilitation of various neuromuscular diseases, particularly diabetes mellitus. Professor Sacco has published more than 70 scientific papers and presented more than 300 conference abstracts in this area.

She is head of the Laboratory of Biomechanics of Movement and Human Posture (LaBiMPH) and director of the post graduate program in Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of Sao Paulo’s School of Medicine.

Professor Isabel Sacco accepted an invitation from the Department of Human Locomotion at the Chemnitz University of Technology, and will give a guest lecture on Thursday, December 8, 2016, at 5:15 pm. Her lecture entitled "From Treatment to Preventive Actions: Advances in the investigation of the Diabetic Polyneuropathy" will take place in the auditorium building N, room 012 and is open to the public. Everyone interested is invited to come and hear about recent findings on prevention and treatment in diabetic research. The lecture will be held in English.
