MERGE going to Brazil for International Networking

Scientists from the Cluster of Excellence MERGE introduce their current research results at the 7th Brazilian-German Frontiers and Science(BRAGFOST) Symposium in Campinas

Since the 20th of September, 2016, Prof. Dr. Olfa Kanoun, owner of the chair for Electrical Measurement and Sensor Technology at the Technical University Chemnitz, as well as Dr. Jürgen Tröltzsch, manager of the Cluster of Excellence MERGE, are participating in the 7th Brazilian-German Frontiers and Science Symposium in Campinas at the invitation of the Alexander Humboldt foundation.

The BRAGFOST Symposium is a series of binational conferences which where collectively organised by the Alexander Humboldt foundation and the Brazilian Federal Agency for Support and Evaluation of Graduate Education CAPES. Every year the symposium brings together over 60 outstanding junior scientists from Germany and Brazil who research in various fields. They are brought together to encourage interdisciplinary communication and ideas beyond the border of their own disciplines and to establish new bilateral contacts for a potential future collaboration. The unusual program ensues the philosophy of Alexander Humboldt who, throughout his life, supported the worldwide connection between scientists, as well as the exchange of results between all research disciplines.

For this years symposium, which ends on the 23rd of September, Kanoun as co-chair in cooperation with Prof. Dr. Gabi Celani from the University Campinas are essentially accountable for the organisation and the subject-specific orientation. The topics of this years convention focus on the interdisciplinary interaction between electrical engineering and architecture. Dr. Christian Müller, group manager at the chair of Electrical Measurement and Sensor Technology at the TU Chemnitz, conducts the session about intelligent sensors between technology and their field of application. Prof. Dr. Ulrike Thomas, owner of the chair for Robotic and Human Computer Interaction at the TU is given an account of the developing trends in industrial robotics and the potential of information technology for their efficient steering. Further topics are digital production as well as the availability and sustainability of water.

For the next symposium, which is taking place in 2017 in Potsdam, a session concerning the topic Multifunctional Integration and Lightweight Structures is planed. The session is arranged and conducted by Dr. Tröltzsch as session chair in cooperation with Prof. Dr. Annelise Kopp Alves from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul who works in the field of multifunctionality. This is an ideal possibility to open up the research of the Cluster of Excellence MERGE to an international audience and prominent scientists, as well as to enthuse renowned junior scientists with the topic. Furthermore, this way potential post doctoral researchers can be brought to the University Chemnitz for a research stay.

Key word: Alexander von Humboldt foundation

Every year the Humboldt foundation enables over 2.000 scientists from all over the world to a research stay in Germany. The foundation maintains a network of worldwide over 27.000 “Humboldtanians” from all research fields in over 140 countries - among them 52 Nobel prize winners.
