International Symposium in the Field of Lightweight Construction
Manufacturing processes suitable for large-scale production of lightweight structures are key technologies – The Federal Cluster of Excellence MERGE invites to the IMTC 2015

Reducing greenhouse gas emissions is a current global challenge. A substantial contribution to the necessary savings in raw materials and energy is made through resource-efficient production processes and the use of weight-optimised components. Lightweight construction is therefore a key technology of the future because wherever masses are moved, the idea of weight optimisation is in focus. This is the objective of the Federal Cluster of Excellence MERGE "Merge Technologies for Multifunctional Lightweight Structures" at the Technische Universität Chemnitz, combining the basic technologies of textile, plastic and metal processing to new processes especially suitable for mass production of lightweight structures. The additional integration of nano and microelectronic systems should also help achieve a new level of structure intelligence in components. Multifunctional lightweight construction requires solution-oriented strategies and market-ready applications that can only be developed through interdisciplinary thinking and acting as well as the networking of stakeholders in the fields of materials, production technology, microelectronics and system integration, design, calculation and simulation, as well as quality assurance. This is the purpose behind the International MERGE Technologies Conference (IMTC) in Chemnitz from 1 to 2 October, 2015.
Experts from science and industry will discuss the latest developments and trends in lightweight construction. The conference deals with the production technology of fibre composite semi-finished products, metal-plastic composites, interface-based themes, the use of renewable resources, the integration of sensors in fibre composites, the modelling and simulation of processes and components, and other topics. In order to bundle the competences in the field of lightweight construction, a joint session was developed in cooperation with other research clusters in Germany such as the Research Campus OHLF (Open Hybrid LabFactory e.V.), Wolfsburg and the Research Campus ARENA 2036 (Active Research Environment for the Next Generation of Automobiles) in Stuttgart. Keynote presentations by companies in the industrial advisory board of MERGE will highlight the latest trends in the economic implementation of mass-produced lightweight construction solutions.
The interdisciplinary exchange between scientists, researchers and users will also play a major role in this second IMTC. To this end, in addition to many various sessions, there will be again ample opportunities to exchange ideas and to network with representatives from various disciplines. A trade fair with exhibitors from the partner companies of the clusters of excellence rounds off the session.
