Luminosity from the Printer

SIOD GbR, a founding team of the Professorship of Digital Printing and Imaging Technology, receives the Chemnitz „Start-up Package“ for company founders

The SIOD GbR was honoured with the Chemnitz “Start-up Package” on May 18th, 2015. The four-person founding team of the Professorship of Digital Printing and Imaging Technology of the TU Chemnitz occupies itself with the development of printed electronics as part of the “exist” grant program of the federal government. SIOD is a paper-thin organic light-emitting diode (OLED) which is applied onto a film during the printing process, which can subsequently be integrated into paper, cardboard or other similar carrier mediums. What already works with an inkjet printer on a laboratory scale is presently being made suitable for mass production. Then the technology could be applied cost-effectively in advertisements, on product packaging or even in magazines, and therefore bring paper to light or set it in motion – which should attract the attention of the observer. “At the moment we can print very bright OLEDs up to four square centimeters in surface area,” explains Patrick Barkowski, of the technological board of directors at SIOD: “We are rescaling the functional process and developing further functionalities.” The team, composed of two scientists, one engineer and a business economist, which was initially established in Berlin, has been located in Chemnitz for the past year and moved into their first premises in the “Start up” building in the Smart Systems Campus in January. Since then, the first customers were also served from here.

“Chemnitz already has a small tradition in printed electronics,” knows Ulrich Geissler, Director of the Economic Development Corporation of the City of Chemnitz, which awards the Start-up Package jointly with the Technologie Centrum Chemnitz GmbH and the Volksbank Chemnitz eG. “It is even more gratifying that the team has taken up residence in Chemnitz.” Here they have found a mentor and the proper machinery for the implementation of their ideas with Prof. Dr. Reinhard R. Baumann of the Professorship of Digital Printing and Imaging Technology of the TU Chemnitz. “The founding team is in very good hands in the Start up building,” explains Dr. Jenz Otto, director of the Technologie Centrum Chemnitz GmbH: “With the proximity to the university and therefore also to the university Founders Network SAXEED, but also to companies like the 3D-Micromac in the immediate vicinity which are occupied with similar processes, the location can be used to their advantage.”

The „Start-up Package“ for company founders is awarded twice annually by the Economic Development Corporation of the City of Chemnitz (CWE), the Technologie Centrum Chemnitz GmbH and the Volksbank Chemnitz e.G. in partnership with the C3 – Chemnitz Event Centres GmbH. Particularly promising and innovative start-ups are honoured with the 2,000 Euro endowment Start-up Package. Included in the package is a trade-fair appearance at the Messe Chemnitz. The bestowal of the “Start-up Package” on SIOD occurs as part of the Technology “Stammtisch” of the CWE at the GEMAC GmbH.
