Chair of Central and Eastern European Studies welcomes visiting scholars from Poland to Chemnitz University of Technology - Funding by DAAD and KAAD

Since June 1, 2021, Prof. Dr. Rafał Riedel has been conducting research at Chemnitz University of Technology for eight months as part of a research stay. The research stay is realized due to combined funding from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the Catholic Academic Exchange Service (KAAD).
Fully-grown research network
Prof. Riedel has long-standing, continuous contacts at the Professorship of Central and Eastern European Studies, which go back to a visiting lectureship in EU Governance Studies from 2014-2016, which was also funded by the DAAD.
"We warmly welcome Prof. Riedel to our professorship and institute and look forward to an intensive, fruitful cooperation," says Prof. Dr. Stefan Garsztecki, holder of the professorship of Central and Eastern European Studies and Vice Dean for Teaching, Young Researchers, and Equality at the Faculty of Humanities at Chemnitz University of Technology.
During his stay in Chemnitz, Riedel will work together with Prof. Garsztecki and Dr. Piotr Kocyba on various publications on authoritarian populism in Poland and Hungary in a comparative perspective.
A moving career - research focus among others in the fields of EU, integration, and political economy
Prof. Riedel studied at the University of Opole, Poland, where he also received his PhD in 2004 on the "Information Policy of the Polish Government to Promote the Idea of Integration in Poland." In 2006 he returned to the University of Opole and has been working at the Institute of Political Science there ever since.
After completing his habilitation on "The Role of the EU Presidency in Times of Transition" at the University of Wrocław (Breslau) in 2014, Riedel received a call to a Jean Monnet Professorship at the University of Opole (Oppeln) in 2015.
His research areas include political-economic integration processes in the European Union, with a special focus on the EU's eastward enlargement and the role of Poland. In recent years, he has focused mainly on economic and energy policies due to the impact of the climate crisis, EU monetary integration, and the political economy of the crisis in Europe.
As a visiting scholar, he has already taught and conducted research at ETH Zurich, the University of St. Gallen, the ARENA Centre for European Studies at the University of Oslo, the University of Miami, and Erasmus University Rotterdam, among others.
