In the 19th century, environmental pollution increased in all industrial locations, which led to intensive discussions in science and technology. In the libraries, “hygiene” was introduced as a new special subject with numerous journals. At the same time, newly built libraries were equipped with air-conditioning technology; filtered air in the reading room was supposed to make working easier.
In his new book “Breathing while Reading”, the Leipzig cultural scientist and former director of Leipzig University Library describes the establishment of modern libraries as repositories of knowledge and places with a “healthy atmosphere”.
