The city center of Tel Aviv, the so-called "White City", was declared World Heritage by the UNESCO in 2003 due to its oustanding cultural importance and incorporation of various trends of the Modern in architecture, particularly the "bauhaus"-style. Within "Tacheles - Year of Yewish Culture in Saxony", some of those buildings are presented within an exhibition also including heritage protection in one of the most expensive cities world-wide.

"Oh yes, I don't want to have lived in vain like most people. I want to bring joy and benefit to the people who live around me or who don't know me after all. I want to live on, even after my death," wrote Anne Frank in her diary on April 5, 1944, impressively documenting her will to survive the horrors of the Holocaust. In her entries, in which she provides insights into her thoughts and feelings as well as the everyday life of a Jewish girl forced into hiding, the young author shows herself to be an intelligent and self-critical observer. With humor and confidence, she maintains her belief in a peaceful future and yet perceives the abysses of the time with great clarity.

The Russian-Jewish composer, painter and writer Grigori Frid experienced the Second World War at the front and the catastrophic post-war period in the Soviet Union. Many of his family members were directly affected by the coercion and terror of the Stalinist dictatorship. Deeply impressed by Anne Frank's diary, he decided to write an opera - regardless of the ban at the time on addressing the Holocaust and Jewish stories. At this event, the opera will be performed purely in concert. The highly concentrated essence of Anne Frank's perceptive world view contained in this work is once again expressed in its unconditionality and topicality.

  • Mono-opera in two parts by Grigori Frid
  • for soprano and chamber orchestra op. 60 (reduced version)
  • Libretto by Grigori Frid based on the diary of Anne Frank
  • German adaptation by Ulrike Patow
  • Performance time approx. 1 hour, 15 minutes, no intermission
