New Bachelor's Degree Program in "Digital Engineering" to Start in the Winter Semester 2026/2027

With an inclusive approach, the program is designed to appeal primarily to international prospective students interested in electrical engineering and information technology

With an inclusive approach, the program is designed to appeal primarily to international prospective students interested in electrical engineering and information technology

Until now, the bachelor’s program at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at Chemnitz University of Technology could only be pursued in German, but that is set to change starting in October 2026. That is when the new bachelor’s program in "Digital Engineering" will launch, offering students the opportunity to begin an undergraduate degree in English. In terms of content, the new program is modeled after the established German-language Bachelor’s program in "Electrical Engineering and Information Technology", providing a solid foundation in mathematics, physics, computer science, and electrical engineering and information technology during the first four semesters. Starting in the fifth semester, students then choose one of two specializations "Automation and Control" or "Information and Communication Systems" in which they receive their first in-depth training. Upon successfully completing their studies in one of these promising fields, they will have both the opportunity to enter the job market directly and the qualifications needed to pursue a master’s degree.

What makes this degree program unique is the fact that, in addition to specialized academic training, the teaching and—above all—the practical application of language skills are an integral part of the curriculum. Students who do not already possess the required German language proficiency must reach Level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) within the first four semesters. These language skills can then be continuously applied and further developed starting in the fifth semester, as subject-specific courses are taught almost exclusively in German from that point on. An additional benefit of this approach is that it is intended to foster networking with students in German-language degree programs and, above all, to support students' future integration into the German job market.

The admission requirements for the program are a general or subject-specific high school diploma or an equivalent qualification for university admission. In addition, applicants must demonstrate English proficiency at the B2 level of the CEFR and German proficiency at the A1 level of the CEFR.

Enrollment for the winter semester 2026/2027: International applicants from outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland can still apply for the winter semester 2026/2027 through uni-assist (www.uni-assist.de/en) until 15 July 2026.

At the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at Chemnitz University of Technology, specialists for a digital and automated future will be trained from the winter semester 2026/27 onward

From intelligent industrial robots and autonomous vehicles to automated greenhouses and networked energy systems – automated and controlled systems are increasingly shaping our everyday lives and industrial value creation. As a result, companies in process engineering, mechanical engineering, the automotive industry, electronics, medical technology and many other sectors are seeing a growing demand for engineers with expertise in automation, robotics and control engineering. This is where the new English-language Master’s programme “Automation, Robotics and Control” comes in, which can be studied at Chemnitz University of Technology from the winter semester 2026/27 onwards. Even before the application deadline has passed, there is already strong international interest in the new master's program.

The programme was designed by the Institute for Automation at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at Chemnitz University of Technology. “With our new Master’s programme, we are creating an offer that covers the entire chain – from the modelling and control of dynamic systems, through intelligent automation, all the way to implementation on real robots – in an integrated way”, says Dean of Studies Prof. Dr. Stefan Streif. “Here, students do not only learn theory; they also work with modern simulation tools and can directly test what they have learned on experimental setups. This creates a clear practical link from theory to application.”

A central element of the degree programme are the practice-oriented project groups in the second and third semesters. In interdisciplinary teams, students with different academic backgrounds work on complex tasks, for example in the areas of intelligent sensor systems, mobile robotics or automated agriculture. “Our project groups mirror typical working situations in companies”, explains Prof. Dr. Peter Protzel, who co-designed the new programme. “Students learn how to analyse requirements together, design solutions, implement and test them, and present the results convincingly”, Protzel adds.

The admission-free programme is taught entirely in English and is aimed at both international and German-speaking applicants. International students have the opportunity to acquire extensive German language skills as part of the programme. At the same time, German-speaking students deepen their subject-specific English skills. In addition, an accompanying seminar series within the project groups provides space to strengthen soft skills such as academic/scientific work, ethics in technology development and the interaction between humans and technology.

According to the Dean of Studies, graduates of the Master’s programme “Automation, Robotics and Control” are excellently qualified for demanding positions in research and development, project management or system integration – both in Germany and internationally. “Through the close linkage of theoretical foundations, practical lab work and interdisciplinary projects, the programme opens up excellent career prospects in industrial companies, research institutes and for a subsequent doctorate”, says Streif.

Enrollment for the winter semester 2026/2027: International applicants from outside the EU/EEA and Switzerland can still apply for the winter semester 2026/2027 through uni-assist (www.uni-assist.de/en) until 15 July 2026.

University Library of Chemnitz University of Technology was voted among the TOP 10 of the nicest university libraries in Germany within an Instagram-survey of the funk Content-Network of ARD and ZDF

Chemnitz University Library is the seventh-nicest university library in Germany. However, this was the result of a current instagram survey of the digital funk Content-Network of the public television broadcasters ARD and ZDF, in which participated subsequent to nomination of the TOP 10 of the university libraries more than 35.000 followers. The predominant target group of this network are persons in the age between 14 and 29 years with a high affinity to social media. “I am very delighted that our Library is particularly attractive for young people in the main age category of people interested in studies and students” comments Angela Malz, Library Director, the results and continues: “This is not only good news for us as Library but we thus also contribute to further raising the attractiveness of the University of Technology and Chemnitz as location for studies.”

Since its relocation in the year 2020, Chemnitz University Library is not only focused on one location, which considerably facilitates orientation for first-year-students, but by the renovated “Ancient Spinning Mill” it also disposes of a very representative building in the heart of the city with a long, very diversified history since its construction in mid 19th century.

In its interior, the building provides a lot of space for a comprehensive open-shelves area extending on both side wings over four levels, for more than 700 standing, sitting, single and team workplaces as well as 19 reservable study cabins (“Carrels”) on the top level. Within the context of the “Third Place”, the “Common Area” in the east wing of the ground floor invites with two childrens’ corners, teamwork spaces as well as eight seating areas to relax and to communicate because here not only unmuted communication but also eating and drinking is permitted. Also culture lovers may benefit from a variety of events happening in a large space situated behind the “Common Area”, which was specifically designed for this purpose (“IdeenReich”) as well as from changing exhibitions on the 1st level.

Finally, those spatial offers are perfected by a variety of services of the University Library for its users ranging from rallies and guided tours via training and e-learning opportunities up to bookable individual consultations (“Book a librarian”).

In the past, the University Library was already awarded several times; Thus, the architects and the builder of the building received the particular acknowledgement of the jury of the “German University Building Prize 2022” as well as the acknowledgement within the award of the Prize for Architecture of the Association of German Architects Saxony 2021.

Back to the ranking of the nicest university libraries: In addition to the Biblioteca Albertina of the University of Leipzig (1st place), the University and State Library Darmstadt (2nd place) and the Library of the University of Hohenheim (3rd place) were reaching the virtual winners’ rostrum. Beside the University Library of Chemnitz University of Technology also those of Marburg, Bamberg, Heidelberg, Tübingen, Freiburg and Berlin were voted underneath the Top Ten.

Starting in the winter semester of 2025/26, Chemnitz University of Technology offers a new English-taught bachelor's program that opens up diverse career opportunities – a master's program in Data Science is available also

Specialists in the field of data science are increasingly in demand in the regional, national, and international job market. At the same time, there are few specialized programs in Germany that impart the necessary knowledge. With this in mind, Chemnitz University of Technology offers the new program, "Foundations in Data Science", starting in the winter semester of 2025/26 at the bachelor's level. Data scientists are distinguished not only by their sound theoretical and practical knowledge, but also by their ability to think logically and abstractly, to proceed analytically, to communicate precisely, to demonstrate perseverance in solving complex problems, and to work effectively in a team. The new, open-admission, English-taught degree program is designed to equip students with these skills with particular emphasis on mathematical principles and techniques.

A feature of this new program in Chemnitz is the close cooperation of the mathematics with electrical engineering and information technology faculties, giving students opportunity to master data-based challenges in practice and to analytically solve complex problems from various application fields. In the age of digitalization, data increasingly forms the basis for decisions and innovations, and thus interdisciplinary collaboration between mathematics and applied sciences is becoming increasingly important.

At Chemnitz University of Technology, international students can also acquire German language skills, contributing significantly towards their integration into the German-speaking job market. Correspondingly, native German speaking students may integrate effectively into the internationalized working environment through their gained confidence and fluency in English. "With this degree, both direct entry into the job market and further qualification in German- or English-taught degree programs – such as the Master's in Data Science at Chemnitz University of Technology – are possible," explains Dean of Studies Prof. Dr. Philipp Reiter, holder of the Chair of Harmonic Analysis at Chemnitz University of Technology. Graduates of the "Foundations in Data Science" bachelor's program are versatile and find exciting career opportunities in a wide variety of fields, from data analysis and business intelligence to software development and artificial intelligence, as well as with the automotive industry and smart mobility.

International applicants can enroll for the 2025/26 winter semester via uni-assist (https://www.uni-assist.de/en/) until July 15, 2025. German applicants can apply until September 19, 2025.

Extensive information about the program is available on the website https://www.tu-chemnitz.de/fids.

The Faculty of Mathematics at Chemnitz University of Technology recommends taking a subject-specific entrance exam before applying. A preparatory course at German school leaver level with an online practice tool is also available.

University Library of Chemnitz University of Technology presents its strategy for development until the year 2030

In the year 2030, the University Library has turned into a „5D-Library”. This is the objective determined in the strategy of the University Library of Chemnitz University of Technology which she has published now in short version on a website (mytuc.org/xrfv). In this context, “5D” stands for: digital, dynamic, durable, divers and discursive. Within those thematic fields, the University Library has defined 24 measures in total which will be implemented by already established task teams step by step within the next five years.

“Naturally, we do not start at zero but we may rely on a lot of what we already achieved, for example regarding the engagement for Open Science, the promotion of Open Access, the digitization of our collections, the modularization of services and within sustainability” comments Angela Malz, Director of the University Library. And as so-called “Third Place”, the University Library offers, in addition to the place of work and the own home, a variable location of learning and knowledge inviting to relax, to learn, to stay and to participate in a variety of events and which, within the upcoming years, enhances its portfolio by i.a. a Virtual Reading Hall. Complementarily Malz adds: “Within the strategy, however, we start also a lot of other projects, for example in the field of enhanced engagement in internationalization, in dealing with new AR- and AI-technologies in the library sector as well as in our engagement for long-time-archiving.”

All started with the moving of the University Library to the Old Spinning Mill building in the year 2020. With respect to the concentration from three de-centralized to one central library location, the geographic location and the related task, the new functionalities of the building like an exhibition and an event area as well as to the merging to one team, it was decided to jointly also determine a direction for the short-, mid- and long-term development of the Library. In this context, i.a. workshops with all staff members of the University Library were organized who merged to working groups dealing with respective thematic key fields. At the beginning of 2023, a comprehensive survey among its users consisting of students and scholars of Chemnitz University of Technology, non-scientific staff members as well as external users was implemented. Non-users were included as well. The objective consisted on including the internal as well as the external point of view in the strategy development process. “In total, 630 online-surveys were filled in completely and integrated in the evaluation of results for deriving action measures”, Dr. Wolfgang Lambrecht, Deputy Director of the University Library, reported.

From this emerged a strategy document comprising of more than 40 pages which was presented in summary to the Library Board of Chemnitz University of Technology in December 2024 and was highly appreciated. The short version of the strategic approaches may now be read on the Library-website mentioned above. “I am very delighted that we completed the strategy development process as scheduled so that we may now, right in time of the year of the Capital of Culture, proceed on our way to a 5D-Library” Malz says. In the mid of the strategy period, a mid-term assessment of the way to the “5D-Library” is envisaged where again adherents of Chemnitz University of Technology and external Library users will be asked for their engagement.

Vaibhav Bamnote is studying for a Master's degree in Advanced Manufacturing at Chemnitz University of Technology - With the help of Chemnitz University of Technology's Career Service, he found an internship at Hörmann Vehicle Engineering in Chemnitz

Can you tell us some things about yourself?

I come from India and have completed my bachelors there. After two years of working, I chose to do my masters in Germany, to learn more about the field of mechanical engineering and explore Europe. Currently I’m studying Masters in advanced manufacturing with specialization in hybrid technologies. Outside academics I often go trekking. Apart from that I read philosophy, watch formula 1, play badminton and do bouldering.

Why did you choose to come to Chemnitz and what is your impression of the city and the university?

Along with diverse fields of research and the ongoing research projects at TUC, the city also played a crucial role in my decision. Chemnitz is relatively small and calm in comparison to many cities in my home country. Also it is almost at the canter of many beautiful neighboring countries and relatively near to the Alps which makes it easy to discover the European culture. Because of which I could travel to 4 different countries within the first 6 months. Also in Chemnitz it was easy to adapt in the new culture. My German skills definitely played a key role in making my social life easy, in getting to know new peoples, become part of student clubs and in day-to-day life. Also with time, professionally as well. The subjects in my course of study are interesting and exams are relatively easy, so I could learn not only about the subjects in my curriculum but also from other degree programs. It has been a great learning experience.

You applied for an internship, were you successful?

Yes, but the application process was not easy for me at the beginning as well. I got so many rejections that I lost the count at one point. That's why I invested a lot of time in improving my German language skills so that I could apply for jobs in German and speak more confidently in job interviews. I started drafting application documents and adapting to respective job profiles. With the help of Career Service, I prepared myself for interviews through tips provided and mock interviews. I received a lot of useful tips for guidance in my application process and refined my CV and cover letter up to the level of expectations needed in German market. Along with this personal guidance, events and lectures organized by Career Service also helped me gain more understanding of the process and requirements of the German job market. Finally, and most importantly, the assistance in preparation for interviews was very helpful. Dos, don’ts and other important aspects got clarified. And finally, I could convert my first German interview to full-time internship at Hörmann Vehicle Engineering in Chemnitz.

What events organized by the Career Service would you suggest the most up to other courses at the university?

The Career Service organizes different events every semester, such as lectures, the career fair TUCconnect, and excursion tours. Especially the excursion tours to the companies, gave me more insight into the ways of working, ongoing projects, job openings and to get in contact with people with similar academic interests. The career fair TUCconnect is the place where you have the best opportunity to get an employment opportunity as you get in contact with the recruiter rather than just being dependent on documents during online applications. I took this opportunity to get my full-time internship. Before the day of the fair, I read about different companies visiting the fair, what different projects and job opportunities they are offering. Then on the day of fair, I met the representatives from those companies, discussed my experience and skills and, talked about expectations and interests. It was a great experience not just professionally but also from my German skills perspective. And I am happy and grateful that the internship worked out.

What are your wishes for the future?

I wish to keep learning in this new work culture and contribute to the diverse research projects across the industry. That’s why it is such a big pleasure for me to be able to work even further at Hörmann Vehicle Engineering as a working student. Someday, I hope to work in the motorsports industry in Germany.

Unique Master Course for Highly Demanded Specialists in the Field of IC Design and Test Starts in Winter Semester 2024/25

TU Chemnitz offers new Master course „Design and Test for Integrated Circuits“ to educate scientists for semiconductor industry

It was spectacular when the Taiwanese semiconductor giant TSMC announced the construction of a semiconductor fabrication unit in Dresden in the so-called “Silicon Saxony” creating around 2,000 new jobs in 2023. In addition, established companies in the region, including Infineon, ELMOS and ‘Rohde & Schwarz’, continually show a high demand for engineers in the field of microelectronics. Test engineers play an essential role to check that the chips from the companies work properly and can be installed in smartphones, screens or electric vehicles. This is where the new English-language master's degree program “Design and Test for Integrated Circuits” comes into play, which can be studied at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology at the Chemnitz University of Technology (TUC) from winter semester 2024/25 onwards.

The chair for Circuit and System Design organizes this unique course: "This new degree program is unique in Germany. Other universities offer IC design in existing courses but we cover the whole chain from design via manufacturing assistance up to the test of integrated circuits completely,” says course director Prof. Dr. Ulrich Heinkel. The laboratories of the chair include two industrial level production test machines from ADVANTEST to offer best learning conditions for the students. The labs allow complete test runs for ICs. Furthermore the cleanroom facilities and special equipment at the Center of Microtechnologies and the Smart Systems Campus including Fraunhofer ENAS are available for students to work.

Highly demanded skilled employees for chip manufacturing from Chemnitz

Test engineers are highly specialized participants in the chip manufacturing process. They check intermediate and final products for correctness and give feedback to the production process control. Tiny faults in production might have catastrophic effects as the electronic product will not work anymore. This test process must run in parallel to the production. So it is essential to integrate test structures into the chips already in the design phase. Better and faster test programs and structures lead to more efficiency in the production process.

To enable a hands-on course the chair Circuit and System Design modified a lab room for industrial test equipment. It also contains the automated test machines. This allows to practice all phases of chip test. Matthias Sauppe, member of the chair Circuit and System Design says: “Our students learn (in addition to the chip design) how to write test programs which check all functions of a chip. Furthermore we teach how to test chips under time pressure. Test time is valuable and future test engineers must be experts in how to optimize those tests in real production processes as the manufacturing process cannot be simply stopped.”

Document for strengthening teacher education in the Chemnitz region signed by Minister of Science Sebastian Gemkow, Minister of Education Christian Piwarz, and Prof. Dr. Maximilian Eibl, Vice President for Academic and International Affairs at Chemnitz University of Technology

Minister of Science Sebastian Gemkow and Minister of Education Christian Piwarz of the Free State of Saxony, along with Prof. Dr. Maximilian Eibl, Vice President for Academic and International Affairs at Chemnitz University of Technology, signed a cornerstone document to strengthen teacher education at Chemnitz University of Technology on September 11, 2023.

This document serves as a foundation for innovative and unique approaches in Germany for the university-level education of prospective teachers. The overarching goal is to guide more students successfully to their first state examination while simultaneously offering prospects for later deployment in the region of southwest Saxony.

Specifically, two new focal points in teacher training at Chemnitz University of Technology are to be established:

1. To counter the shortage of specialist teachers in the MINT fields (mathematics, informatics, natural sciences, technology), the declared goal is to design the appropriate bachelor's degree program in this field in such a way that recognition for teaching at secondary schools is possible. Furthermore, Chemnitz University of Technology is examining the development of a teaching degree program in MINT teaching at secondary schools in cooperation with the University of Leipzig or TU Dresden. The associated internships are to be completed in the region of southwest Saxony.

2. To expand the professional opportunities of future primary school teachers in the region of southwest Saxony, Chemnitz University of Technology is developing a master's program called "Primary Level Plus" (two semesters). Graduates of the primary school teaching degree program can initially enroll in this program in the subject of mathematics, thereby obtaining qualification for secondary school mathematics teaching. Current mathematics teachers at primary schools can also enroll in this new program in the future, thus qualifying for teaching at secondary schools.

After the signing of the cornerstone document, Minister of Science Sebastian Gemkow said: "We are taking entirely new paths in teacher education, specifically oriented towards concrete needs. For this, we are providing additional resources for Chemnitz University of Technology. For the conceptualization, a total of 285,000 euros will be made available this year and next year. For the implementation starting from the winter semester of 2024/2025, more than 530,000 euros are planned annually. We must succeed in having sufficient teachers in front of the classes again in the future. The universities in Saxony are making a major contribution to this, and we are doing everything we can to support them."

Minister of Education Christian Piwarz added: "Our measures for recruiting teachers are having an effect. We are increasingly successful in filling vacancies at primary schools. However, this is more difficult at secondary schools and in MINT subjects. With the now jointly assembled package of measures, we are advancing teacher education in this area. The studies will become more attractive, permeable, and regional." The Minister emphasized that both responsible ministries will remain in constant exchange with the universities to examine further measures for improvement. "We cannot afford to lose well-trained young teachers on their way to graduation. We are taking care of that!"

Vice President Prof. Dr. Maximilian Eibl said: "The primary school teacher training at Chemnitz University of Technology is a success story, which has already entered its tenth year, and to which we are now adding another chapter. Through the cornerstone document signed today, we have a conceptual framework to design the teacher training at Chemnitz University of Technology for the first time with a view to qualifying secondary school teachers in MINT subjects."

In the competition of the Bundesverband Hochschulkommunikation for the awarding of innovative projects in digital communication, the study advertising campaign of Chemnitz University of Technology stood out against about 40 projects and achieved 3rd place

On September 6, 2023, the project "TUCdiscover – Discover Your Opportunities at the Chemnitz University of Technology" was awarded during a ceremony at the annual conference of the Bundesverband Hochschulkommunikation in Magdeburg. The information and advertising campaign TUCdiscover of Chemnitz University of Technology (TUC), which conveys the advantages of the Chemnitz study location through modern communication channels and a very personal as well as individual approach to prospective students, received 3rd place. The award was accepted by project coordinator Susann Kappler and student ambassador Angelina Wettinger from TUC.

"The award shows that we are also keeping up with the times in study advertising. I thank all participants for their creativity and their outstanding commitment," says Prof. Dr. Maximilian Eibl, Vice President for Academic and International Affairs at TUC.

"Our overall strategy of addressing young people proactively and at eye level through ambassadors and content that relates to their everyday lives and their questions about starting their studies is what makes our project special. The fact that our work is rewarded not only by the good results in the evaluation of the measures, but now also by this award, makes me very happy," says Susann Kappler from the TUCdiscover project.

Initially, the project had stood out against about 40 other submissions and made it to the shortlist with eleven other outstanding projects. The specialist jury, which consisted of experts from the fields of public relations (ressourcenmangel an der panke GmbH, Zucker. Kommunikation), journalism (ZEIT Online), and university communication, ultimately found the TUC's study advertising campaign to be worthy of the award.

Laura Schlotthauer, Managing Director of ressourcenmangel an der panke GmbH, presented the winning projects at the awards ceremony. She praised the TUCdiscover project as an example of how to openly deal with perceived locational disadvantages through a consistent, personal approach to the target group using authentic ambassadors, a high-quality presentation, innovative formats and channels, and a professionally executed social media campaign.

Background: "TUCdiscover"

The TUCdiscover project team coordinates the campaign together with the press office and cross-media editorial team of the university. The goal is the supra-regional approach to prospective students primarily via the landing page www.study-in-chemnitz.com, through authentic ambassadors, innovative social media formats, and tailor-made editorial and visual content about studying and living in Chemnitz.

The winners are determined by the students themselves: In the two categories "Most Popular Universities" and "Most Popular Colleges", the testimonials from the year 2022 decide the ranking.
The Abitur is in hand - and now to study at the Chemnitz University of Technology! But which course of study is right for me? Which requirements do I have to fulfill? What can I experience in my free time in Chemnitz, the European Capital of Culture 2025, besides studying? These and many other questions will be answered at the University Information Day on June 11, 2022 in the new University Library of Chemnitz University of Technology in the heart of the city. The Central Course Guidance Service, numerous subject advisors as well as student initiatives and specialist groups will be on hand to answer questions and give prospective students an insight into student life in Chemnitz. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., there will be a lot of useful information at the information booths of all faculties and in lectures - not only about the 97 bachelor, master, diploma and teaching degree programs of Chemnitz University of Technology. Information will also be provided on internships, career prospects, financing studies, living on campus and studying abroad.

Multiple award-winning university library as central event venue

"We are delighted to be able to welcome the students in person to our newly renovated library building and have also planned guided tours for them so that they can get to know this special place of learning even better," says Susann Kappler from the TUCdiscover team, which is playing a key role in organizing the day. "Guests at the University Information Day will also be able to see for themselves the impressive design of the historical industrial building at Straße der Nationen 33, which has already won two architecture awards in recent months," adds her colleague Monique Reuther.

Sporty, tasteful and surprising

On the forecourt of the university library, you can also engage in sports during the five-hour "info marathon" or strengthen yourself with a snack at the stand of the Chemnitz-Zwickau Student Union, with smoothies or with ice cream scoops in Chemnitz University of Technology colors. By the way, the first 300 ice cream scoops are free of charge. In addition, all prospective students will receive a TUC surprise bag. The event will be supported musically by Radio UNiCC.

Mechanical engineering experience route has 17 stations

Those who would like to experience the study contents of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in particular can gain insights into the diverse world of mechanical engineering at 17 stations on the campus on Reichenhainer Straße from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. - from virtual technologies to offers for do-it-yourself production to numerous demonstrations such as the printed loudspeakers, a varied program will be offered.
