Start Smart - Mentoring
You are about to start your studies or you are just enrolled and you are wondering how everything works at university? You have no idea what studying actually means?
Exchange ideas with experienced students of your field of study or get support from staff of your faculty. Get to know other students who are asking the same questions and start smart in your studies!
- Mentoring refers to a time-limited partnership between two or more people of different experience levels.
- An experienced person (mentor) supports and advises one or more newcomer at university (mentees) in their personal and professional development.

Start Smart - Mentoring at the Faculty of Humanities
In the mentoring program Start Smart of the Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences, an experienced mentor of higher semesters of the same study program accompanies a new enrolled student (called mentee). The mentees should thereby be facilitated the entry into the study at the TU Chemnitz. In return, they receive many answers to initial organizational and technical questions in personal meetings with their mentor. The mentoring program turn lasts for the winter semester, but can be extended if required.

Deine Teilnahme als Mentee oder Mentor/-in am Mentoring-Programm Start Smart beginnt mit der Anmeldung. Alle neuen Mentor/-innen werden von uns in einer Schulung auf ihre Tätigkeit vorbereitet. Im Matching wählen sich die Mentees dann eine Mentorin oder einen Mentor aus und wir vermitteln den Kontakt. Danach startet ihr individuell eure Mentoringbeziehung.
Bei den Special Events während des Wintersemesters kannst du andere Start Smartler kennenlernen. In geselliger Runde besteht die Möglichkeit, eine gute Zeit zu verbringen und neue Leute kennenzulernen. Sollte es im Laufe des Mentorings zu Problemen kommen, stehen wir dir gern jederzeit zur Seite. Komm einfach auf uns zu!
Du erhältst ein Zertifikat für deine Teilnahme, wenn du uns am Ende des Mentoring-Programmes anhand eines Onlinefragebogens berichtest, wie sich deine Mentoringbeziehung gestaltet hat, was dabei besonders gut gelaufen ist und was du dir anders gewünscht hättest. Deine Rückmeldungen und Impulse nehmen wir gern auf. Sie gestalten das Mentoring-Programm für die nächsten Jahre mit.
In der Abschlussveranstaltung von Start Smart nehmen wir offiziell Abschied voneinander und lassen das gemeinsame Wintersemester Revue passieren. Möchtet ihr darüber hinaus eure Mentoringbeziehung fortführen, sind wir als Koordinationsteam selbstverständlich für euch da.

Start Smart – Mentoring at the faculty of mechanical engineering
The Mentoring Program Start Smart of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering is a group mentoring in which an experienced researcher/academic staff (called a mentor) supports a study group (mentees) at the start of their studies, to get along at the TU Chemnitz. The mentors support the mentees especially in practical matters, such as the study organization and information gathering.
After the introductory course in your field of study at the beginning of the winter semester, you will get to know your study group and your mentor. There you will also learn how to exchange ideas in the group, you can ask your questions about the study start and make first contacts with fellow students. In the first semester, different dates and topics will be agreed in the study group, which you will discuss in regular meetings.
You can take part if you have just started your studies at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. Registration is not required. All you need to do is to meet your study group and mentor in a designated room after the introductory course to study at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.

Start Smart - Mentoring at the Fakulty of Mathematics
The mentoring program Start Smart of the Faculty of Mathematics is a small group mentoring. A student (mentor) of a higher semester supports a small group of about 2-4 new enrolled students (mentees) at the start of their studies and in finding their way around the TU Chemnitz. The mentors support the mentees especially in practical matters, such as the study organization and information gathering.
During the orientation week at the beginning of the winter semester, you can sign up as a mentee in a list and then you recieve an invitation from an mentor for a first meeting. There you get to know all the other mentees in your group, you can asked all questions and you will get first answers to your study programm. Other meetings are individually arranged where the topics of all mentees are central in your meetings.
You can take part if you have just started your studies at the Faculty of Mathematics. Registration is not required. You just sign up at the introductory event in the list provided.

Start Smart - Mentoring at the Fakulty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology
Mentoring at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology (ET / IT) supports in particular the undergraduate students in the bachelor's programs and takes place in a small groups. Experienced academic staff and students as mentors support the undergraduate students (mentees) at the start of their studies. The mentoring team is there to help with all questions concerning the start of studies.
During the orientation week and the introductory events, the team of Start Smart ET / IT introduces itself and gives you a first insight into the mentoring offers of the faculty. During the semester, there will be several group meetings in which you can ask your questions about studying and also exchange ideas with your fellow students.
If you are new to the faculty of ET / IT or simply happy about organizational and technical support and exchange with other students, just come to one of our meetings if you are interested. A special registration is not required.

Start Smart - Mentoring at the Institute of Chemistry
A new university, a foreign country and the technical language as a hurdle - The mentoring supports foreign undergraduates of all semesters of the bachelor's degree program in chemistry as well as the master's degree programs in chemistry and advanced functional materials to find their way around the institute and the requirements of Master degree program. Under the guidance of an experienced person (mentor), in the regular meetings you can exchange ideas across semesters. In addition to detailed explanations on the organization of the study and the instructions for obtaining information, the focus is primarily on dealing with the German language in the scientific environment of chemistry. If required, assistance will also be given in English.
These are our objectives:
- You can practice speaking German as a technical language in chemistry.
- You will become acquainted with scientific working techniques and be able to apply them (structure of protocols, preparation of internships, handling of specialized literature).
- You will get to know students of your own subject throughout the semester.
- You will receive answers to your questions about the organization around the study.
- You get in contact with suitable persons for you problems that need to be solved.
- You can share your experiences with others and benefit from others.
- You get to know the faculty of science and your own field of study better and can help shape student life in it.
